- Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their accusations.
- Now Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Then they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
Luke 22:1
- The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which begins with the Passover celebration, was drawing near.
- The leading priests and teachers of religious law were actively plotting Jesus' murder. But they wanted to kill him without starting a riot, a possibility they greatly feared.

Mark 14:1
- It was now two days before the Passover celebration and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and put him to death.
- "But not during the Passover," they agreed, "or there will be a riot."

John 18:28
- Jesus' trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor. His accusers didn't go in themselves because it would defile them, and they wouldn't be allowed to celebrate the Passover feast.
- So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked, "What is your charge against this man?"
- "We wouldn't have handed him over to you if he weren't a criminal!" they retorted.
- "Then take him away and judge him by your own laws," Pilate told them. "Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone," the Jewish leaders replied.
- This fulfilled Jesus' prediction about the way he would die.
Mark 15:1
- Very early in the morning the leading priests, other leaders, and teachers of religious law--the entire high council--met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
- Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "Yes, it is as you say."
- Then the leading priests accused him of many crimes,
- and Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to say something? What about all these charges against you?"
- But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate's surprise.
Isaiah 61:1

- Jesus looked at them and said, "Then what do the Scriptures mean? 'The stone rejected by the builders has now become the cornerstone.'
Matthew 26:59
- Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death.
- But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, there was no testimony they could use. Finally, two men were found
- who declared, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'"
- Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Well, aren't you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?"
