- This messenger was John the Baptist. He lived in the wilderness and was preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had turned from their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.
- People from Jerusalem and from all over Judea traveled out into the wilderness to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.
Matthew 11:3
- "Are you really the Messiah we've been waiting for, or should we keep looking for someone else?"
- Jesus told them, "Go back to John and tell him about what you have heard and seen--
- the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.

- John used many such warnings as he announced the Good News to the people.
John 3:28
- You yourselves know how plainly I told you that I am not the Messiah. I am here to prepare the way for him--that is all.
- The bride will go where the bridegroom is. A bridegroom's friend rejoices with him. I am the bridegroom's friend, and I am filled with joy at his success.
- He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.
- "He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. I am of the earth, and my understanding is limited to the things of earth, but he has come from heaven.
- He tells what he has seen and heard, but how few believe what he tells them!
John 1:29
- The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
- He is the one I was talking about when I said, 'Soon a man is coming who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before I did.'
- I didn't know he was the one, but I have been baptizing with water in order to point him out to Israel."
- Then John said, "I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him.
- I didn't know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, 'When you see the Holy Spirit descending and resting upon someone, he is the one you are looking for. He is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
John 5:33
- In fact, you sent messengers to listen to John the Baptist, and he preached the truth.
- But the best testimony about me is not from a man, though I have reminded you about John's testimony so you might be saved.
- John shone brightly for a while, and you benefited and rejoiced.
