63: Now the guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating him.

One of the Temple guards standing there struck Jesus on the face. "Is that the way to answer the high priest?" he demanded.

Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death.
But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, there was no testimony they could use. Finally, two men were found
who declared, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'"
Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Well, aren't you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?"
But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, "I demand in the name of the living God that you tell us whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God."

For I am mocked and shamed for your sake; humiliation is written all over my face.
Even my own brothers pretend they don't know me; they treat me like a stranger.
Passion for your house burns within me, so those who insult you are also insulting me.
When I weep and fast before the LORD, they scoff at me.
When I dress in sackcloth to show sorrow, they make fun of me.

God hates me and tears angrily at my flesh. He gnashes his teeth at me and pierces me with his eyes.
People jeer and laugh at me. They slap my cheek in contempt. A mob gathers against me.

Two criminals were crucified with him, their crosses on either side of his.

And the people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. "Ha! Look at you now!" they yelled at him. "You can destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days, can you?
Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!"
The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. "He saved others," they scoffed, "but he can't save himself!

Many were amazed when they saw him--beaten and bloodied, so disfigured one would scarcely know he was a person.

He was despised and rejected--a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way when he went by. He was despised, and we did not care.

They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.
They made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on his head, and they placed a stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery, yelling, "Hail! King of the Jews!"
And they spit on him and grabbed the stick and beat him on the head with it.
When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.

The soldiers took him into their headquarters and called out the entire battalion.
They dressed him in a purple robe and made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on his head.
Then they saluted, yelling, "Hail! King of the Jews!"
And they beat him on the head with a stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.
When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish. He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterward. Now he is seated in the place of highest honor beside God's throne in heaven.

Mobilize! Marshal your troops! The enemy is laying siege to Jerusalem. With a rod they will strike the leader of Israel in the face.

Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would testify against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But their efforts were in vain.
Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other.
Finally, some men stood up to testify against him with this lie:
"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.'"
But even then they didn't get their stories straight!

I give my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pull out my beard. I do not hide from shame, for they mock me and spit in my face.
Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be dismayed. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will triumph.

He did not retaliate when he was insulted. When he suffered, he did not threaten to get even. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.

But they are glad now that I am in trouble; they gleefully join together against me. I am attacked by people I don't even know; they hurl slander at me continually.
They mock me with the worst kind of profanity, and they snarl at me.

The LORD, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel, says to the one who is despised and rejected by a nation, to the one who is the servant of rulers: "Kings will stand at attention when you pass by. Princes will bow low because the LORD has chosen you. He, the faithful LORD, the Holy One of Israel, chooses you."

"And now their sons mock me with their vulgar song! They taunt me!
They despise me and won't come near me, except to spit in my face.
For God has cut the cords of my tent. He has humbled me, so they have thrown off all restraint.
These outcasts oppose me to my face. They send me sprawling; they lay traps in my path.
They block my road and do everything they can to hasten my calamity, knowing full well that I have no one to help me.

And the people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.
"So! You can destroy the Temple and build it again in three days, can you? Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!"
The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders also mocked Jesus.
"He saved others," they scoffed, "but he can't save himself! So he is the king of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross, and we will believe in him!
He trusted God--let God show his approval by delivering him! For he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
