2: You have dug a deep pit to trap them at Acacia. But never forget--I will settle with all of you for what you have done.

The LORD says, "All their wickedness began at Gilgal; there I began to hate them. I will drive them from my land because of their evil actions. I will love them no more because all their leaders are rebels.

Destruction is certain for those who try to hide their plans from the LORD, who try to keep him in the dark concerning what they do! "The LORD can't see us," you say to yourselves. "He doesn't know what is going on!"

Its citizens are bands of robbers, lying in ambush for their victims. Gangs of priests murder travelers along the road to Shechem and practice every kind of sin.

Are they not the worst of rebels, full of slander? They are as insolent as bronze, as hard and cruel as iron. All of them lead others into corruption.

"For the past twenty-three years--from the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, until now--the LORD has been giving me his messages. I have faithfully passed them on to you, but you have not listened.
"Again and again, the LORD has sent you his prophets, but you have not listened or even tried to hear.
Each time the message was this: `Turn from the evil road you are traveling and from the evil things you are doing. Only then will I let you live in this land that the LORD gave to you and your ancestors forever.
Do not make me angry by worshiping the idols you have made. Then I will not harm you.'
"But you would not listen to me," says the LORD. "You made me furious by worshiping your idols, bringing on yourselves all the disasters you now suffer.

LORD, you are searching for honesty. You struck your people, but they paid no attention. You crushed them, but they refused to turn from sin. They are determined, with faces set like stone; they have refused to repent.

Sharp tongues are the swords they wield; bitter words are the arrows they aim.
They shoot from ambush at the innocent, attacking suddenly and fearlessly.
They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps. "Who will ever notice?" they ask.
As they plot their crimes, they say, "We have devised the perfect plan!" Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning.

Then the people said, "Come on, let's find a way to stop Jeremiah. We have our own priests and wise men and prophets. We don't need him to teach the law and give us advice and prophecies. Let's spread rumors about him and ignore what he says."

"I brought hunger to every city and famine to every town. But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.
"I kept the rain from falling when you needed it the most, ruining all your crops. I sent rain on one town but withheld it from another. Rain fell on one field, while another field withered away.
People staggered from one town to another for a drink of water, but there was never enough. But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.
"I struck your farms and vineyards with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured all your fig and olive trees. But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.
"I sent plagues against you like the plagues I sent against Egypt long ago. I killed your young men in war and slaughtered all your horses. The stench of death filled the air! But still you wouldn't return to me," says the LORD.

Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick.

O LORD, rescue me from evil people. Preserve me from those who are violent,
those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long.
Their tongues sting like a snake; the poison of a viper drips from their lips.
O LORD, keep me out of the hands of the wicked. Preserve me from those who are violent, for they are plotting against me.
The proud have set a trap to catch me; they have stretched out a net; they have placed traps all along the way.

I am the one who corrects and disciplines everyone I love. Be diligent and turn from your indifference.

How terrible it will be for rebellious, polluted Jerusalem, the city of violence and crime.
It proudly refuses to listen even to the voice of the LORD. No one can tell it anything; it refuses all correction. It does not trust in the LORD or draw near to its God.

Then the LORD told me about the plots my enemies were making against me.
I had been as unaware as a lamb on the way to its slaughter. I had no idea that they were planning to kill me! "Let's destroy this man and all his words," they said. "Let's kill him, so his name will be forgotten forever."

The leading priests and teachers of religious law were actively plotting Jesus' murder. But they wanted to kill him without starting a riot, a possibility they greatly feared.
Then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve disciples,
and he went over to the leading priests and captains of the Temple guard to discuss the best way to betray Jesus to them.
They were delighted that he was ready to help them, and they promised him a reward.

I sent my prophets to cut you to pieces. I have slaughtered you with my words, threatening you with death. My judgment will strike you as surely as day follows night.

You curse and lie and kill and steal and commit adultery. There is violence everywhere, with one murder after another.

The next morning a group of Jews got together and bound themselves with an oath to neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
There were more than forty of them.
They went to the leading priests and other leaders and told them what they had done. "We have bound ourselves under oath to neither eat nor drink until we have killed Paul.
You and the high council should tell the commander to bring Paul back to the council again," they requested. "Pretend you want to examine his case more fully. We will kill him on the way."
