12: "But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will be accused before kings and governors of being my followers.
Acts 12:1
- About that time King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church.
- He had the apostle James (John's brother) killed with a sword.
- When Herod saw how much this pleased the Jewish leaders, he arrested Peter during the Passover celebration
- and imprisoned him, placing him under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. Herod's intention was to bring Peter out for public trial after the Passover.
Matthew 23:34
- I will send you prophets and wise men and teachers of religious law. You will kill some by crucifixion and whip others in your synagogues, chasing them from city to city.
- As a result, you will become guilty of murdering all the godly people from righteous Abel to Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered in the Temple between the altar and the sanctuary.
- I assure you, all the accumulated judgment of the centuries will break upon the heads of this very generation.
Acts 8:3
- Saul was going everywhere to devastate the church. He went from house to house, dragging out both men and women to throw them into jail.

Acts 7:57
- Then they put their hands over their ears, and drowning out his voice with their shouts, they rushed at him.
- They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. The official witnesses took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.
- And as they stoned him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
- And he fell to his knees, shouting, "Lord, don't charge them with this sin!" And with that, he died.
Acts 21:30
- The whole population of the city was rocked by these accusations, and a great riot followed. Paul was dragged out of the Temple, and immediately the gates were closed behind him.
- As they were trying to kill him, word reached the commander of the Roman regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.

- Dear friends, don't be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you.
- Instead, be very glad--because these trials will make you partners with Christ in his suffering, and afterward you will have the wonderful joy of sharing his glory when it is displayed to all the world.
- Be happy if you are insulted for being a Christian, for then the glorious Spirit of God will come upon you.
Acts 25:1
- Three days after Festus arrived in Caesarea to take over his new responsibilities, he left for Jerusalem,
- where the leading priests and other Jewish leaders met with him and made their accusations against Paul.
Acts 25:11
- If I have done something worthy of death, I don't refuse to die. But if I am innocent, neither you nor anyone else has a right to turn me over to these men to kill me. I appeal to Caesar!"
- Festus conferred with his advisers and then replied, "Very well! You have appealed to Caesar, and to Caesar you shall go!"
Luke 11:49
- This is what God in his wisdom said about you: 'I will send prophets and apostles to them, and they will kill some and persecute the others.'
- "And you of this generation will be held responsible for the murder of all God's prophets from the creation of the world--
- from the murder of Abel to the murder of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, it will surely be charged against you.

- When Paul was called in, Tertullus laid charges against Paul in the following address to the governor: "Your Excellency, you have given peace to us Jews and have enacted reforms for us.
- And for all of this we are very grateful to you.
- But lest I bore you, kindly give me your attention for only a moment as I briefly outline our case against this man.
- For we have found him to be a troublemaker, a man who is constantly inciting the Jews throughout the world to riots and rebellions against the Roman government. He is a ringleader of the sect known as the Nazarenes.
Acts 25:22
- "I'd like to hear the man myself," Agrippa said. And Festus replied, "You shall--tomorrow!"
- So the next day Agrippa and Bernice arrived at the auditorium with great pomp, accompanied by military officers and prominent men of the city. Festus ordered that Paul be brought in.
- Then Festus said, "King Agrippa and all present, this is the man whose death is demanded both by the local Jews and by those in Jerusalem.
- But in my opinion he has done nothing worthy of death. However, he appealed his case to the emperor, and I decided to send him.
Acts 5:17
- The high priest and his friends, who were Sadducees, reacted with violent jealousy.
- They arrested the apostles and put them in the jail.
- But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them,
Acts 6:12
- Naturally, this roused the crowds, the elders, and the teachers of religious law. So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council.
- The lying witnesses said, "This man is always speaking against the Temple and against the law of Moses.
- We have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy the Temple and change the customs Moses handed down to us."
- At this point everyone in the council stared at Stephen because his face became as bright as an angel's.

- The council accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.

- For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing God a service.
- This is because they have never known the Father or me.

- They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn't escape.
- So he took no chances but put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.
- Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.
- Suddenly, there was a great earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!
Mark 13:9
- But when these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the courts and beaten in the synagogues. You will be accused before governors and kings of being my followers. This will be your opportunity to tell them about me.
- And the Good News must first be preached to every nation.
- But when you are arrested and stand trial, don't worry about what to say in your defense. Just say what God tells you to. Then it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
- "Brother will betray brother to death, fathers will betray their own children, and children will rise against their parents and cause them to be killed.
- And everyone will hate you because of your allegiance to me. But those who endure to the end will be saved.
Matthew 10:16
- "Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. Be as wary as snakes and harmless as doves.
- But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and beaten in the synagogues.
- And you must stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. This will be your opportunity to tell them about me--yes, to witness to the world.
- When you are arrested, don't worry about what to say in your defense, because you will be given the right words at the right time.
- For it won't be you doing the talking--it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Revelation 2:10
- Don't be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The Devil will throw some of you into prison and put you to the test. You will be persecuted for 'ten days.' Remain faithful even when facing death, and I will give you the crown of life.
