19: You are convinced that you are a guide for the blind and a beacon light for people who are lost in darkness without God.

But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness. If the light you think you have is really darkness, how deep that darkness will be!

The Pharisees who were standing there heard him and asked, "Are you saying we are blind?"
"If you were blind, you wouldn't be guilty," Jesus replied. "But you remain guilty because you claim you can see.

Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you are so wise! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are well thought of, but we are laughed at.

so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch."

You say, 'I am rich. I have everything I want. I don't need a thing!' And you don't realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.
I advise you to buy gold from me--gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. And also buy white garments so you will not be shamed by your nakedness. And buy ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see.

For the leaders of my people--the LORD's watchmen, his shepherds--are blind to every danger. They are like silent watchdogs that give no warning when danger comes. They love to lie around, sleeping and dreaming.

"Blind guides! How terrible it will be for you! For you say that it means nothing to swear 'by God's Temple'--you can break that oath. But then you say that it is binding to swear 'by the gold in the Temple.'
Blind fools! Which is greater, the gold, or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?
And you say that to take an oath 'by the altar' can be broken, but to swear 'by the gifts on the altar' is binding!
How blind! For which is greater, the gift on the altar, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
When you swear 'by the altar,' you are swearing by it and by everything on it.

He says, "You will do more than restore the people of Israel to me. I will make you a light to the Gentiles, and you will bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."

Stop fooling yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world's standards, you will have to become a fool so you can become wise by God's standards.

Now let's talk about food that has been sacrificed to idols. You think that everyone should agree with your perfect knowledge. While knowledge may make us feel important, it is love that really builds up the church.
Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn't really know very much.

so that no one can speak a word of blame against you. You are to live clean, innocent lives as children of God in a dark world full of crooked and perverse people. Let your lives shine brightly before them.

the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined."

to open their eyes so they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God's people, who are set apart by faith in me.'

"You were born in sin!" they answered. "Are you trying to teach us?" And they threw him out of the synagogue.

"We have never heard anyone talk like this!" the guards responded.
"Have you been led astray, too?" the Pharisees mocked.
"Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him?
These ignorant crowds do, but what do they know about it? A curse on them anyway!"

You are the light of the world--like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see.

Through you I am saying to the prisoners of darkness, `Come out! I am giving you your freedom!' They will be my sheep, grazing in green pastures and on hills that were previously bare.
They will neither hunger nor thirst. The searing sun and scorching desert winds will not reach them anymore. For the LORD in his mercy will lead them beside cool waters.

Destruction is certain for those who think they are wise and consider themselves to be clever.

I assure you, anyone who doesn't have their kind of faith will never get into the Kingdom of God."

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace."
