56: Yet though he did all this for them, they continued to test his patience. They rebelled against the Most High and refused to follow his decrees.
Judges 2:11

- They burned incense at the shrines, just like the nations the LORD had driven from the land ahead of them. So the people of Israel had done many evil things, arousing the LORD's anger.
Ezekiel 16:15
- "But you thought you could get along without me, so you trusted instead in your fame and beauty. You gave yourself as a prostitute to every man who came along. Your beauty was theirs for the asking!
- You used the lovely things I gave you to make shrines for idols, where you carried out your acts of prostitution. Unbelievable! How could such a thing ever happen?
- You took the very jewels and gold and silver ornaments I had given you and made statues of men and worshiped them, which is adultery against me.
- You used the beautifully embroidered clothes I gave you to cover your idols. Then you used my oil and incense to worship them.
- Imagine it! You set before them as a lovely sacrifice the fine flour and oil and honey I had given you, says the Sovereign LORD.
Deuteronomy 32:15
- But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation.
- They stirred up his jealousy by worshiping foreign gods; they provoked his fury with detestable acts.
- They offered sacrifices to demons, non-gods, to gods they had not known before, to gods only recently arrived, to gods their ancestors had never feared.
- You neglected the Rock who had fathered you; you forgot the God who had given you birth.

Deuteronomy 31:16
- The LORD said to Moses, "You are about to die and join your ancestors. After you are gone, these people will begin worshiping foreign gods, the gods of the land where they are going. They will abandon me and break the covenant I have made with them.
- Then my anger will blaze forth against them. I will abandon them, hiding my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Terrible trouble will come down on them, so that they will say, `These disasters have come because God is no longer among us!'
- At that time I will hide my face from them on account of all the sins they have committed by worshiping other gods.
- "Now write down the words of this song, and teach it to the people of Israel. Teach them to sing it, so it may serve as a witness against them.
- For I will bring them into the land I swore to give their ancestors--a land flowing with milk and honey. There they will become prosperous; they will eat all the food they want and become well nourished. Then they will begin to worship other gods; they will despise me and break my covenant.
Psalms 78:40
- Oh, how often they rebelled against him in the desert and grieved his heart in the wilderness.
- Again and again they tested God's patience and frustrated the Holy One of Israel.
Nehemiah 9:25
- Our ancestors captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took over houses full of good things, with cisterns already dug and vineyards and olive groves and orchards in abundance. So they ate until they were full and grew fat and enjoyed themselves in all your blessings.
- "But despite all this, they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They threw away your law, they killed the prophets who encouraged them to return to you, and they committed terrible blasphemies.
