7: "O my people, listen as I speak. Here are my charges against you, O Israel: I am God, your God!

"Listen to me, O my people, while I give you stern warnings. O Israel, if you would only listen!

"Now write down the words of this song, and teach it to the people of Israel. Teach them to sing it, so it may serve as a witness against them.
For I will bring them into the land I swore to give their ancestors--a land flowing with milk and honey. There they will become prosperous; they will eat all the food they want and become well nourished. Then they will begin to worship other gods; they will despise me and break my covenant.
Then great disasters will come down on them, and this song will stand as evidence against them, for it will never be forgotten by their descendants. I know what these people are like, even before they have entered the land I swore to give them."

Then I said to them, `Each of you, get rid of your idols. Do not defile yourselves with the Egyptian gods, for I am the LORD your God.'

Listen to what the LORD is saying: "Stand up and state your case against me. Let the mountains and hills be called to witness your complaints.
"And now, O mountains, listen to the LORD's complaint! He has a case against his people Israel! He will prosecute them to the full extent of the law.
O my people, what have I done to make you turn from me? Tell me why your patience is exhausted! Answer me!
For I brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from your slavery. I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to help you.
"Don't you remember, my people, how King Balak of Moab tried to have you cursed and how Balaam son of Beor blessed you instead? And remember your journey from Acacia to Gilgal, when I, the LORD, did everything I could to teach you about my faithfulness."

"Come now, let us argue this out," says the LORD. "No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you as white as wool.

Give them this message from the Sovereign LORD: When I chose Israel and revealed myself to her in Egypt, I swore that I, the LORD, would be her God.

You warned them to return to your law, but they became proud and obstinate and disobeyed your commands. They did not follow your regulations, by which people will find life if only they obey. They stubbornly turned their backs on you and refused to listen.
In your love, you were patient with them for many years. You sent your Spirit, who, through the prophets, warned them about their sins. But still they wouldn't listen! So once again you allowed the pagan inhabitants of the land to conquer them.

At that time I will put you on trial. I will be a ready witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who cheat employees of their wages, who oppress widows and orphans, or who deprive the foreigners living among you of justice, for these people do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty.

Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the nations of the earth; for all the earth belongs to me.
And you will be to me a kingdom of priests, my holy nation.' Give this message to the Israelites."

That is why the LORD his God allowed the king of Aram to defeat Ahaz and to exile large numbers of his people to Damascus. The armies of Israel also defeated Ahaz and inflicted many casualties on his army.

The LORD will not abandon his chosen people, for that would dishonor his great name. He made you a special nation for himself.
"As for me, I will certainly not sin against the LORD by ending my prayers for you. And I will continue to teach you what is good and right.
But be sure to fear the LORD and sincerely worship him. Think of all the wonderful things he has done for you.
But if you continue to sin, you and your king will be destroyed."

I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure, just as gold and silver are refined and purified by fire. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, `These are my people,' and they will say, `The LORD is our God.'"

For it was I, the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.
"But no, my people wouldn't listen. Israel did not want me around.
So I let them follow their blind and stubborn way, living according to their own desires.

Therefore, I will bring my case against you and will keep on accusing you, even against your children's children in the years to come. I, the LORD, have spoken!

You have declared today that the LORD is your God. You have promised to obey his laws, commands, and regulations by walking in his ways and doing everything he tells you.
The LORD has declared today that you are his people, his own special treasure, just as he promised, and that you must obey all his commands.

`I am the LORD your God,' I told them. `Follow my laws, pay attention to my instructions,
and keep my Sabbath days holy, for they are a sign to remind you that I am the LORD your God.'

Again and again the LORD had sent his prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah: "Turn from all your evil ways. Obey my commands and laws, which are contained in the whole law that I commanded your ancestors and which I gave you through my servants the prophets."

Listen to the word of the LORD, people of Jacob--all you families of Israel!
This is what the LORD says: "What sin did your ancestors find in me that led them to stray so far? They worshiped foolish idols, only to become foolish themselves.
