21: Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but a person is tested by being praised.

You have tested us, O God; you have purified us like silver melted in a crucible.

I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure, just as gold and silver are refined and purified by fire. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, `These are my people,' and they will say, `The LORD is our God.'"

He will sit and judge like a refiner of silver, watching closely as the dross is burned away. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold or silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the LORD.

Dear friends, don't be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you.

The LORD's promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over.

After four years, Absalom said to the king, "Let me go to Hebron to offer a sacrifice to the LORD in fulfillment of a vow I made to him.

"All right," the king told him. "Go and fulfill your vow." So Absalom went to Hebron.
But while he was there, he sent secret messengers to every part of Israel to stir up a rebellion against the king. "As soon as you hear the trumpets," his message read, "you will know that Absalom has been crowned king in Hebron."

Now no one in Israel was as handsome as Absalom. From head to foot, he was the perfect specimen of a man.

This was their song: "Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!"
This made Saul very angry. "What's this?" he said. "They credit David with ten thousands and me with only thousands. Next they'll be making him their king!"

When Saul recognized this, he became even more afraid of him.
But all Israel and Judah loved David because he was so successful at leading his troops into battle.

These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold--and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
