25: It is dangerous to make a rash promise to God before counting the cost.
Numbers 30:2
- A man who makes a vow to the LORD or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do.
- "If a young woman makes a vow to the LORD or a pledge under oath while she is still living at her father's home,
- and her father hears of the vow or pledge but says nothing, then all her vows and pledges will stand.
- But if her father refuses to let her fulfill the vow or pledge on the day he hears of it, then all her vows and pledges will become invalid. The LORD will forgive her because her father would not let her fulfill them.
- "Now suppose a young woman takes a vow or makes an impulsive pledge and later marries.
Ecclesiastes 5:4
- So when you make a promise to God, don't delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him.
- It is better to say nothing than to promise something that you don't follow through on.
- In such cases, your mouth is making you sin. And don't defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved.

- "If your vow involves giving a clean animal--one that is acceptable as an offering to the LORD--then your gift to the LORD will be considered holy.
- The animal should never be exchanged or substituted for another--neither a good animal for a bad one nor a bad animal for a good one. But if such an exchange is in fact made, then both the original animal and the substitute will be considered holy.
Leviticus 22:10
- "No one outside a priest's family may ever eat the sacred offerings, even if the person lives in a priest's home or is one of his hired servants.
- However, if the priest buys slaves with his own money, they may eat of his food. And if his slaves have children, they also may share his food.
- If a priest's daughter marries someone outside the priestly family, she may no longer eat the sacred offerings.
- But if she becomes a widow or is divorced and has no children to support her, and she returns to live in her father's home, she may eat her father's food again. But other than these exceptions, only members of the priests' families are allowed to eat the sacred offerings.
- "Anyone who eats the sacred offerings without realizing it must pay the priest for the amount eaten, plus an added penalty of 20 percent.
