17: Your own soul is nourished when you are kind, but you destroy yourself when you are cruel.

For there will be no mercy for you if you have not been merciful to others. But if you have been merciful, then God's mercy toward you will win out over his judgment against you.

Then the King will say to those on the right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.
I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.'
"Then these righteous ones will reply, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink?
Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing?

" `O King Nebuchadnezzar, please listen to me. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past by being merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.'

For he oppressed the poor and left them destitute. He foreclosed on their homes.
He was always greedy but never satisfied. Of all the things he dreamed about, nothing remains.
Nothing is left after he finishes gorging himself; therefore, his prosperity will not endure.
"In the midst of plenty, he will run into trouble, and disasters will destroy him.
May God give him a bellyful of trouble. May God rain down his anger upon him.

Look here, you rich people, weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you.
Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth-eaten rags.
Your gold and silver have become worthless. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh in hell. This treasure you have accumulated will stand as evidence against you on the day of judgment.
For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The wages you held back cry out against you. The cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.
You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every whim. Now your hearts are nice and fat, ready for the slaughter.

This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself, "Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?" It is all so meaningless and depressing.

Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor. The LORD rescues them in times of trouble.
The LORD protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity and rescues them from their enemies.
The LORD nurses them when they are sick and eases their pain and discomfort.
"O LORD," I prayed, "have mercy on me. Heal me, for I have sinned against you."

I want you to share your food with the hungry and to welcome poor wanderers into your homes. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.
"If you do these things, your salvation will come like the dawn. Yes, your healing will come quickly. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind.
Then when you call, the LORD will answer. `Yes, I am here,' he will quickly reply. "Stop oppressing the helpless and stop making false accusations and spreading vicious rumors!
Feed the hungry and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as day.
The LORD will guide you continually, watering your life when you are dry and keeping you healthy, too. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.

Dishonest money brings grief to the whole family, but those who hate bribes will live.

Remember this--a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.
You must each make up your own mind as to how much you should give. Don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves the person who gives cheerfully.
And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.
As the Scriptures say, "Godly people give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will never be forgotten."
For God is the one who gives seed to the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will give you many opportunities to do good, and he will produce a great harvest of generosity in you.

When darkness overtakes the godly, light will come bursting in. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous.
All goes well for those who are generous, who lend freely and conduct their business fairly.
Such people will not be overcome by evil circumstances. Those who are righteous will be long remembered.
They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the LORD to care for them.
They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly.

"If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

The righteous pass away; the godly often die before their time. And no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come.

If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use in giving--large or small--it will be used to measure what is given back to you."

I don't say this because I want a gift from you. What I want is for you to receive a well-earned reward because of your kindness.

The smooth tricks of evil people will be exposed, including all the lies they use to oppress the poor in the courts.
But good people will be generous to others and will be blessed for all they do.
