9: After they went up to the valley of Eshcol and scouted the land, they discouraged the people of Israel from entering the land the LORD was giving them.
Deuteronomy 1:24
- They crossed into the hills and came to the valley of Eshcol and explored it.
- They picked some of its fruit and brought it back to us. And they reported that the land the LORD our God had given us was indeed a good land.
- "But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God and refused to go in.
- You murmured and complained in your tents and said, `The LORD must hate us, bringing us here from Egypt to be slaughtered by these Amorites.
- How can we go on? Our scouts have demoralized us with their report. They say that the people of the land are taller and more powerful than we are, and that the walls of their towns rise high into the sky! They have even seen giants there--the descendants of Anak!'
Numbers 13:23
- When they came to what is now known as the valley of Eshcol, they cut down a cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them! They also took samples of the pomegranates and figs.
- At that time the Israelites renamed the valley Eshcol--"cluster"--because of the cluster of grapes they had cut there.
- After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned
- to Moses, Aaron, and the people of Israel at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They reported to the whole community what they had seen and showed them the fruit they had taken from the land.
- This was their report to Moses: "We arrived in the land you sent us to see, and it is indeed a magnificent country--a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is some of its fruit as proof.
