5: When Jesus arrived in Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him,

When Jesus had finished saying all this, he went back to Capernaum.
Now the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death.
When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish leaders to ask him to come and heal his slave.
So they earnestly begged Jesus to come with them and help the man. "If anyone deserves your help, it is he," they said,
"for he loves the Jews and even built a synagogue for us."

In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius, who was a captain of the Italian Regiment.
He was a devout man who feared the God of Israel, as did his entire household. He gave generously to charity and was a man who regularly prayed to God.
One afternoon about three o'clock, he had a vision in which he saw an angel of God coming toward him. "Cornelius!" the angel said.
Cornelius stared at him in terror. "What is it, sir?" he asked the angel. And the angel replied, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have not gone unnoticed by God!
Now send some men down to Joppa to find a man named Simon Peter.

The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, "Truly, this was the Son of God!"

But the commanding officer wanted to spare Paul, so he didn't let them carry out their plan. Then he ordered all who could swim to jump overboard first and make for land,

But Paul said to the commanding officer and the soldiers, "You will all die unless the sailors stay aboard."

When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, "Truly, this was the Son of God!"

Paul called one of the officers and said, "Take this young man to the commander. He has something important to tell him."

Several days later Jesus returned to Capernaum, and the news of his arrival spread quickly through the town.

When a light wind began blowing from the south, the sailors thought they could make it. So they pulled up anchor and sailed along close to shore.

But instead of going to Nazareth, he went to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.

As they tied Paul down to lash him, Paul said to the officer standing there, "Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn't even been tried?"

Then the commander called two of his officers and ordered, "Get two hundred soldiers ready to leave for Caesarea at nine o'clock tonight. Also take two hundred spearmen and seventy horsemen.

And you people of Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to the place of the dead. For if the miracles I did for you had been done in Sodom, it would still be here today.
