29: for he taught as one who had real authority--quite unlike the teachers of religious law.

For the word of God is full of living power. It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires. It exposes us for what we really are.
Nothing in all creation can hide from him. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes. This is the God to whom we must explain all that we have done.

So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, "Why don't your disciples follow our age-old customs? For they eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony."
Jesus replied, "You hypocrites! Isaiah was prophesying about you when he said,
'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far away. Their worship is a farce, for they replace God's commands with their own man-made teachings.'
For you ignore God's specific laws and substitute your own traditions."
Then he said, "You reject God's laws in order to hold on to your own traditions.

But as for me, I am filled with power and the Spirit of the LORD. I am filled with justice and might, fearlessly pointing out Israel's sin and rebellion.

I will raise up a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites. I will tell that prophet what to say, and he will tell the people everything I command him.
I will personally deal with anyone who will not listen to the messages the prophet proclaims on my behalf.

Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to interview Jesus.
"Why do your disciples disobey our age-old traditions?" they demanded. "They ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat."
Jesus replied, "And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God?
For instance, God says, 'Honor your father and mother,' and 'Anyone who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.'
But you say, 'You don't need to honor your parents by caring for their needs if you give the money to God instead.'

The Sovereign LORD has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know what to say to all these weary ones. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will.

But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

"But I warn you--unless you obey God better than the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees do, you can't enter the Kingdom of Heaven at all!

"Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they love to parade in flowing robes and to have everyone bow to them as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and at banquets.
But they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property, and then, to cover up the kind of people they really are, they make long prayers in public. Because of this, their punishment will be the greater."

for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply!

"The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the Scriptures.
So practice and obey whatever they say to you, but don't follow their example. For they don't practice what they teach.
They crush you with impossible religious demands and never lift a finger to help ease the burden.
"Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear extra long tassels on their robes.
And how they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the most prominent seats in the synagogue!

Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up a Prophet like me from among your own people. Listen carefully to everything he tells you.'
Then Moses said, 'Anyone who will not listen to that Prophet will be cut off from God's people and utterly destroyed.'

When Jesus returned to the Temple and began teaching, the leading priests and other leaders came up to him. They demanded, "By whose authority did you drive out the merchants from the Temple? Who gave you such authority?"
"I'll tell you who gave me the authority to do these things if you answer one question," Jesus replied.
"Did John's baptism come from heaven or was it merely human?" They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe him.
But if we say it was merely human, we'll be mobbed, because the people think he was a prophet."
So they finally replied, "We don't know." And Jesus responded, "Then I won't answer your question either.

Yes, how terrible it will be for you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn him into twice the son of hell as you yourselves are.
"Blind guides! How terrible it will be for you! For you say that it means nothing to swear 'by God's Temple'--you can break that oath. But then you say that it is binding to swear 'by the gold in the Temple.'
Blind fools! Which is greater, the gold, or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?
And you say that to take an oath 'by the altar' can be broken, but to swear 'by the gifts on the altar' is binding!
How blind! For which is greater, the gift on the altar, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?

But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

None of them was able to stand against the wisdom and Spirit by which Stephen spoke.

Let these false prophets tell their dreams, but let my true messengers faithfully proclaim my every word. There is a difference between chaff and wheat!
Does not my word burn like fire?" asks the LORD. "Is it not like a mighty hammer that smashes rock to pieces?

Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth.
