9: And I tell you this, a man who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery--unless his wife has been unfaithful. "

A wife is married to her husband as long as he lives. If her husband dies, she is free to marry whomever she wishes, but this must be a marriage acceptable to the Lord.

"Anyone who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."

But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Now, for those who are married I have a command that comes not from me, but from the Lord. A wife must not leave her husband.
But if she does leave him, let her remain single or else go back to him. And the husband must not leave his wife.
Now, I will speak to the rest of you, though I do not have a direct command from the Lord. If a Christian man has a wife who is an unbeliever and she is willing to continue living with him, he must not leave her.
And if a Christian woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he is willing to continue living with her, she must not leave him.

I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you, something so evil that even the pagans don't do it. I am told that you have a man in your church who is living in sin with his father's wife.

But one night God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, "You are a dead man, for that woman you took is married."

Let me illustrate. When a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her.
So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law and does not commit adultery when she remarries.

"But you thought you could get along without me, so you trusted instead in your fame and beauty. You gave yourself as a prostitute to every man who came along. Your beauty was theirs for the asking!

So Pharaoh called for Abram and accused him sharply. "What is this you have done to me?" he demanded. "Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?
Why were you willing to let me marry her, saying she was your sister? Here is your wife! Take her and be gone!"

The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband also gives authority over his body to his wife.

He had built pagan shrines in the hill country of Judah and had led the people of Jerusalem and Judah to give themselves to pagan gods.
