Matthew 15:2

2: "Why do your disciples disobey our age-old traditions?" they demanded. "They ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat."

His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first performing the ceremonial washing required by Jewish custom.

You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the evil powers of this world. So why do you keep on following rules of the world, such as,
"Don't handle, don't eat, don't touch."
Such rules are mere human teaching about things that are gone as soon as we use them.
These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, humility, and severe bodily discipline. But they have no effect when it comes to conquering a person's evil thoughts and desires.

They noticed that some of Jesus' disciples failed to follow the usual Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.

Don't let anyone lead you astray with empty philosophy and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the evil powers of this world, and not from Christ.

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver.

So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, "Why don't your disciples follow our age-old customs? For they eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony."

And God said, "Let bright lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. They will be signs to mark off the seasons, the days, and the years.
