14: "Why?" Pilate demanded. "What crime has he committed?" But the crowd only roared the louder, "Crucify him!"

When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, "Crucify! Crucify!You crucify him," Pilate said. "I find him not guilty."

He had done no wrong, and he never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man's grave.

Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and said, "I find nothing wrong with this man!"

"What is truth?" Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, "He is not guilty of any crime.

He was despised and rejected--a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way when he went by. He was despised, and we did not care.

"Why?" Pilate demanded. "What crime has he committed?" But the crowd only roared the louder, "Crucify him!"
Pilate saw that he wasn't getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this man. The responsibility is yours!"
And all the people yelled back, "We will take responsibility for his death--we and our children!"

Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders told him, "If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar. Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar."
When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha).
It was now about noon of the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, "Here is your king!"
"Away with him," they yelled. "Away with him--crucify him!What? Crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the leading priests shouted back.

Just then, as Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: "Leave that innocent man alone, because I had a terrible nightmare about him last night."

The crowd listened until Paul came to that word; then with one voice they shouted, "Away with such a fellow! Kill him! He isn't fit to live!"
They yelled, threw off their coats, and tossed handfuls of dust into the air.

When the captain of the Roman soldiers handling the executions saw what had happened, he praised God and said, "Surely this man was innocent. "

and he announced his verdict. "You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.
Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.

The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen's accusation, and they shook their fists in rage.
But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily upward into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God's right hand.
And he told them, "Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God's right hand!"
Then they put their hands over their ears, and drowning out his voice with their shouts, they rushed at him.

But when the crowd realized he was a Jew, they started shouting again and kept it up for two hours: "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians! Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

But the crowd shouted louder and louder for Jesus' death, and their voices prevailed.
So Pilate sentenced Jesus to die as they demanded.

He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.

Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs on my head. These enemies who seek to destroy me are doing so without cause. They attack me with lies, demanding that I give back what I didn't steal.

The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, "Truly, this was the Son of God!"

He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has now been set apart from sinners, and he has been given the highest place of honor in heaven.

"I have sinned," he declared, "for I have betrayed an innocent man.What do we care?" they retorted. "That's your problem."
