55: But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

I am the one who corrects and disciplines everyone I love. Be diligent and turn from your indifference.

"Have I ever rejoiced when my enemies came to ruin or become excited when harm came their way?
No, I have never cursed anyone or asked for revenge.
My servants have never let others go hungry.

So let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good.
For Job has said, `I am innocent, but God has taken away my rights.
I am innocent, but they call me a liar. My suffering is incurable, even though I have not sinned.'
"Has there ever been a man as arrogant as Job, with his thirst for irreverent talk?
He seeks the companionship of evil people. He spends his time with wicked men.

Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate when people say unkind things about you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God wants you to do, and he will bless you for it.

But Paul said to him, "God will slap you, you whitewashed wall! What kind of judge are you to break the law yourself by ordering me struck like that?"
Those standing near Paul said to him, "Is that the way to talk to God's high priest?"
"I'm sorry, brothers. I didn't realize he was the high priest," Paul replied, "for the Scriptures say, 'Do not speak evil of anyone who rules over you.'"

"Do you think it is right for you to claim, `I am righteous before God'?
Yet you also ask, `What's the use of living a righteous life? How will it benefit me?'
"I will answer you and all your friends, too.

I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance."

Then he and Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock. "Listen, you rebels!" he shouted. "Must we bring you water from this rock?"
Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out. So all the people and their livestock drank their fill.
But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!"

"God has surely handed your enemy over to you this time!" Abishai whispered to David. "Let me thrust that spear through him. I'll pin him to the ground, and I won't need to strike twice!"
"No!" David said. "Don't kill him. For who can remain innocent after attacking the LORD's anointed one?
Surely the LORD will strike Saul down someday, or he will die in battle or of old age.
But the LORD forbid that I should kill the one he has anointed! But I'll tell you what--we'll take his spear and his jug of water and then get out of here!"

And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!

So don't bother rebuking mockers; they will only hate you. But the wise, when rebuked, will love you all the more.

"The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?

"What am I going to do with you sons of Zeruiah!" David exclaimed. "This is not a day for execution but for celebration! I am once again the king of Israel!"

Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak!"

One of the men with Jesus pulled out a sword and slashed off an ear of the high priest's servant.

But Job replied, "You talk like a godless woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?" So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.

"Now's your opportunity!" David's men whispered to him. "Today is the day the LORD was talking about when he said, `I will certainly put Saul into your power, to do with as you wish.'" Then David crept forward and cut off a piece of Saul's robe.
But then David's conscience began bothering him because he had cut Saul's robe.
"The LORD knows I shouldn't have done it," he said to his men. "It is a serious thing to attack the LORD's anointed one, for the LORD himself has chosen him."
So David sharply rebuked his men and did not let them kill Saul. After Saul had left the cave and gone on his way,

"I used to believe that I ought to do everything I could to oppose the followers of Jesus of Nazareth.
Authorized by the leading priests, I caused many of the believers in Jerusalem to be sent to prison. And I cast my vote against them when they were condemned to death.
Many times I had them whipped in the synagogues to try to get them to curse Christ. I was so violently opposed to them that I even hounded them in distant cities of foreign lands.

Jesus turned to Peter and said, "Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, and not from God's."
