2: They demanded, "By whose authority did you drive out the merchants from the Temple? Who gave you such authority?"

"What right do you have to do these things?" the Jewish leaders demanded. "If you have this authority from God, show us a miraculous sign to prove it."

"By whose authority did you drive out the merchants from the Temple? Who gave you such authority?"
"I'll tell who gave me authority to do these things if you answer one question," Jesus replied.
"Did John's baptism come from heaven or was it merely human? Answer me!"
They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe him.
But do we dare say it was merely human?" For they were afraid that the people would start a riot, since everyone thought that John was a prophet.

"Who do you think you are?" the man replied. "Who appointed you to be our prince and judge? Do you plan to kill me as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?" Moses was badly frightened because he realized that everyone knew what he had done.

When Jesus returned to the Temple and began teaching, the leading priests and other leaders came up to him. They demanded, "By whose authority did you drive out the merchants from the Temple? Who gave you such authority?"
"I'll tell you who gave me the authority to do these things if you answer one question," Jesus replied.
"Did John's baptism come from heaven or was it merely human?" They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe him.
But if we say it was merely human, we'll be mobbed, because the people think he was a prophet."
So they finally replied, "We don't know." And Jesus responded, "Then I won't answer your question either.

"But the man in the wrong pushed Moses aside and told him to mind his own business. 'Who made you a ruler and judge over us?' he asked.

And the Father leaves all judgment to his Son,
so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. But if you refuse to honor the Son, then you are certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.
"I assure you, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.
"And I assure you that the time is coming, in fact it is here, when the dead will hear my voice--the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.
The Father has life in himself, and he has granted his Son to have life in himself.

They brought in the two disciples and demanded, "By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?"
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Leaders and elders of our nation,
are we being questioned because we've done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed?
Let me clearly state to you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed in the name and power of Jesus Christ from Nazareth, the man you crucified, but whom God raised from the dead.

And so God sent back the same man his people had previously rejected by demanding, 'Who made you a ruler and judge over us?' Through the angel who appeared to him in the burning bush, Moses was sent to be their ruler and savior.
And by means of many miraculous signs and wonders, he led them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and back and forth through the wilderness for forty years.
"Moses himself told the people of Israel, 'God will raise up a Prophet like me from among your own people.'
Moses was with the assembly of God's people in the wilderness. He was the mediator between the people of Israel and the angel who gave him life-giving words on Mount Sinai to pass on to us.
"But our ancestors rejected Moses and wanted to return to Egypt.

"You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? But your ancestors did, and so do you!

So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on.
Then the crowds spread out their coats on the road ahead of Jesus.
As they reached the place where the road started down from the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.
"Bless the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in highest heaven!"
But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, "Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!"

Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the merchants from their stalls.
He told them, "The Scriptures declare, 'My Temple will be a place of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of thieves."
