Lamentations 1:5

5: Her oppressors have become her masters, and her enemies prosper, for the LORD has punished Jerusalem for her many sins. Her children have been captured and taken away to distant lands.

Lamentations 3:39

  2. Instead, let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn again in repentance to the LORD.

  5. "You have engulfed us with your anger, chased us down, and slaughtered us without mercy.

Jeremiah 5:3

  1. LORD, you are searching for honesty. You struck your people, but they paid no attention. You crushed them, but they refused to turn from sin. They are determined, with faces set like stone; they have refused to repent.
  2. Then I said, "But what can we expect from the poor and ignorant? They don't know the ways of the LORD. They don't understand what God expects of them.
  3. I will go and speak to their leaders. Surely they will know the LORD's ways and what God requires of them." But the leaders, too, had utterly rejected their God.
  4. So now a lion from the forest will attack them; a wolf from the desert will pounce on them. A leopard will lurk near their towns, tearing apart any who dare to venture out. For their rebellion is great, and their sins are many.
  5. "How can I pardon you? For even your children have turned from me. They have sworn by gods that are not gods at all! I fed my people until they were fully satisfied. But they thanked me by committing adultery and lining up at the city's brothels.

Deuteronomy 29:18

  1. The LORD made this covenant with you so that no man, woman, family, or tribe among you would turn away from the LORD our God to worship these gods of other nations, and so that no root among you would bear bitter and poisonous fruit.
  2. Let none of those who hear the warnings of this curse consider themselves immune, thinking, `I am safe, even though I am walking in my own stubborn way.' This would lead to utter ruin!
  3. The LORD will not pardon such people. His anger and jealousy will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will come down on them, and the LORD will erase their names from under heaven.
  4. The LORD will separate them from all the tribes of Israel, to pour out on them all the covenant curses recorded in this Book of the Law.
  5. "Then the generations to come, both your own descendants and the foreigners who come from distant lands, will see the devastation of the land and the diseases the LORD will send against it.

Zephaniah 3:1

  1. How terrible it will be for rebellious, polluted Jerusalem, the city of violence and crime.
  2. It proudly refuses to listen even to the voice of the LORD. No one can tell it anything; it refuses all correction. It does not trust in the LORD or draw near to its God.
  3. Its leaders are like roaring lions hunting for their victims--out for everything they can get. Its judges are like ravenous wolves at evening time, who by dawn have left no trace of their prey.
  4. Its prophets are arrogant liars seeking their own gain. Its priests defile the Temple by disobeying God's laws.
  5. But the LORD is still there in the city, and he does no wrong. Day by day his justice is more evident, but no one takes notice--the wicked know no shame.

Daniel 9:7

  1. "Lord, you are in the right; but our faces are covered with shame, just as you see us now. This is true of us all, including the people of Judah and Jerusalem and all Israel, scattered near and far, wherever you have driven us because of our disloyalty to you.
  2. O LORD, we and our kings, princes, and ancestors are covered with shame because we have sinned against you.
  3. But the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.
  4. We have not obeyed the LORD our God, for we have not followed the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.
  5. All Israel has disobeyed your law and turned away, refusing to listen to your voice. "So now the solemn curses and judgments written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out against us because of our sin.

Lamentations 2:17

  1. But it is the LORD who did it just as he warned. He has fulfilled the promises of disaster he made long ago. He has destroyed Jerusalem without mercy and caused her enemies to rejoice over her and boast of their power.

Psalms 89:42

  1. You have strengthened his enemies against him and made them all rejoice.

Micah 3:9

  1. Listen to me, you leaders of Israel! You hate justice and twist all that is right.
  2. You are building Jerusalem on a foundation of murder and corruption.
  3. You rulers govern for the bribes you can get; you priests teach God's laws only for a price; you prophets won't prophesy unless you are paid. Yet all of you claim you are depending on the LORD. "No harm can come to us," you say, "for the LORD is here among us."
  4. So because of you, Mount Zion will be plowed like an open field; Jerusalem will be reduced to rubble! A great forest will grow on the hilltop, where the Temple now stands.

Jeremiah 44:21

  1. "Do you think the LORD did not know that you and your ancestors, your kings and officials, and all the people were burning incense to idols in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
  2. It was because the LORD could no longer bear all the evil things you were doing that he made your land an object of cursing--a desolate ruin without a single inhabitant--as it is today.

Deuteronomy 31:16

  1. The LORD said to Moses, "You are about to die and join your ancestors. After you are gone, these people will begin worshiping foreign gods, the gods of the land where they are going. They will abandon me and break the covenant I have made with them.
  2. Then my anger will blaze forth against them. I will abandon them, hiding my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Terrible trouble will come down on them, so that they will say, `These disasters have come because God is no longer among us!'
  3. At that time I will hide my face from them on account of all the sins they have committed by worshiping other gods.

Deuteronomy 32:15

  1. But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation.
  2. They stirred up his jealousy by worshiping foreign gods; they provoked his fury with detestable acts.
  3. They offered sacrifices to demons, non-gods, to gods they had not known before, to gods only recently arrived, to gods their ancestors had never feared.
  4. You neglected the Rock who had fathered you; you forgot the God who had given you birth.

Jeremiah 23:14

2 Chronicles 36:14

  1. All the leaders of the priests and the people became more and more unfaithful. They followed the pagan practices of the surrounding nations, desecrating the Temple of the LORD in Jerusalem.
  2. The LORD, the God of their ancestors, repeatedly sent his prophets to warn them, for he had compassion on his people and his Temple.
  3. But the people mocked these messengers of God and despised their words. They scoffed at the prophets until the LORD's anger could no longer be restrained and there was no remedy.

Jeremiah 52:27

  1. And there at Riblah in the land of Hamath, the king of Babylon had them all put to death. So the people of Judah were sent into exile from their land.

  3. Then my enemies will see that the LORD is on my side. They will be ashamed that they taunted me, saying, "Where is the LORD--that God of yours?" With my own eyes I will see them trampled down like mud in the streets.

Leviticus 26:15

  1. and if you break my covenant by rejecting my laws and treating my regulations with contempt,
  2. I will punish you. You will suffer from sudden terrors, with wasting diseases, and with burning fevers, causing your eyes to fail and your life to ebb away. You will plant your crops in vain because your enemies will eat them.
  3. I will turn against you, and you will be defeated by all your enemies. They will rule over you, and you will run even when no one is chasing you!

Jeremiah 12:7

  1. "I have abandoned my people, my special possession. I have surrendered my dearest ones to their enemies.

Ezekiel 22:24

  1. "Son of man, give the people of Israel this message: In the day of my indignation, you will become like an uncleared wilderness or a desert without rain.
  2. Your princes plot conspiracies just as lions stalk their prey. They devour innocent people, seizing treasures and extorting wealth. They increase the number of widows in the land.
  3. Your priests have violated my laws and defiled my holy things. To them there is no difference between what is holy and what is not. And they do not teach my people the difference between what is ceremonially clean and unclean. They disregard my Sabbath days so that my holy name is greatly dishonored among them.
  4. Your leaders are like wolves, who tear apart their victims. They actually destroy people's lives for profit!
  5. And your prophets announce false visions and speak false messages. They say, `My message is from the Sovereign LORD,' when the LORD hasn't spoken a single word to them. They repair cracked walls with whitewash!
