4: These people were left to test the Israelites--to see whether they would obey the commands the LORD had given to their ancestors through Moses.

Deuteronomy 8:2

  1. Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would really obey his commands.

Deuteronomy 33:8
