2: For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in this land; instead, you were to destroy their altars. Why, then, have you disobeyed my command?

- And you will accept their daughters, who worship other gods, as wives for your sons. Then they will cause your sons to commit adultery against me by worshiping other gods.
Deuteronomy 12:2
- "When you drive out the nations that live there, you must destroy all the places where they worship their gods--high on the mountains, up on the hills, and under every green tree.
- Break down their altars and smash their sacred pillars. Burn their Asherah poles and cut down their carved idols. Erase the names of their gods from those places!
Ezra 9:1
- But then the Jewish leaders came to me and said, "Many of the people of Israel, and even some of the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the land. - For the men of Israel have married women from these people and have taken them as wives for their sons. So the holy race has become polluted by these mixed marriages. To make matters worse, the officials and leaders are some of the worst offenders."
- When I heard this, I tore my clothing, pulled hair from my head and beard, and sat down utterly shocked.
Deuteronomy 20:16
- "As for the towns of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as a special possession, destroy every living thing in them.
- You must completely destroy the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, just as the LORD your God has commanded you.
- This will keep the people of the land from teaching you their detestable customs in the worship of their gods, which would cause you to sin deeply against the LORD your God.

Psalms 106:34
- Israel failed to destroy the nations in the land, as the LORD had told them to.
- Instead, they mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs.
- They worshiped their idols, and this led to their downfall.
- They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons.
- They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder.
Exodus 23:32
- "Make no treaties with them and have nothing to do with their gods.
- Do not even let them live among you! If you do, they will infect you with their sin of idol worship, and that would be disastrous for you."
Psalms 78:55
- He drove out the nations before them; he gave them their inheritance by lot. He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes.
- Yet though he did all this for them, they continued to test his patience. They rebelled against the Most High and refused to follow his decrees.

Numbers 33:52

Deuteronomy 7:16
- "You must destroy all the nations the LORD your God hands over to you. Show them no mercy and do not worship their gods. If you do, they will trap you.
Jeremiah 2:18
- "What have you gained by your alliances with Egypt and Assyria? What good to you are the waters of the Nile and the Euphrates?
