71: He was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the Twelve, who would betray him.

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests
and asked, "How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?" And they gave him thirty pieces of silver.
From that time on, Judas began looking for the right time and place to betray Jesus.

Arrange for an evil person to turn on him. Send an accuser to bring him to trial.
When his case is called for judgment, let him be pronounced guilty. Count his prayers as sins.
Let his years be few; let his position be given to someone else.

I say this because some godless people have wormed their way in among you, saying that God's forgiveness allows us to live immoral lives. The fate of such people was determined long ago, for they have turned against our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

But you followed God's prearranged plan. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to the cross and murdered him.

When Judas, who had betrayed him, realized that Jesus had been condemned to die, he was filled with remorse. So he took the thirty pieces of silver back to the leading priests and other leaders.
"I have sinned," he declared, "for I have betrayed an innocent man.What do we care?" they retorted. "That's your problem."
Then Judas threw the money onto the floor of the Temple and went out and hanged himself.

Even my best friend, the one I trusted completely, the one who shared my food, has turned against me.

"Brothers, it was necessary for the Scriptures to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided the Temple police to arrest Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David.
Judas was one of us, chosen to share in the ministry with us."
(Judas bought a field with the money he received for his treachery, and falling there, he burst open, spilling out his intestines.
The news of his death spread rapidly among all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name Akeldama, which means "Field of Blood.")
Peter continued, "This was predicted in the book of Psalms, where it says, 'Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.' And again, 'Let his position be given to someone else.'

Jesus said, "It is the one to whom I give the bread dipped in the sauce." And when he had dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.

Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had gone there many times with his disciples.
The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a battalion of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.
Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him. Stepping forward to meet them, he asked, "Whom are you looking for?"
"Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am he," Jesus said. Judas was standing there with them when Jesus identified himself.
And as he said, "I am he," they all fell backward to the ground!
