12: So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.

The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a battalion of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.

Then the people who had arrested Jesus led him to the home of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of religious law and other leaders had gathered.

As Paul was about to be taken inside, he said to the commander, "May I have a word with you?Do you know Greek?" the commander asked, surprised.

As they were trying to kill him, word reached the commander of the Roman regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.

So the Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. They took him to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze chains and made to grind grain in the prison.

When they arrived at the place where God had told Abraham to go, he built an altar and placed the wood on it. Then he tied Isaac up and laid him on the altar over the wood.

Very early in the morning the leading priests, other leaders, and teachers of religious law--the entire high council--met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.

The commander brought Paul inside and ordered him lashed with whips to make him confess his crime. He wanted to find out why the crowd had become so furious.
As they tied Paul down to lash him, Paul said to the officer standing there, "Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn't even been tried?"
The officer went to the commander and asked, "What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen!"
So the commander went over and asked Paul, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?Yes, I certainly am," Paul replied.
"I am, too," the commander muttered, "and it cost me plenty!But I am a citizen by birth!"

Jesus was led to the high priest's home where the leading priests, other leaders, and teachers of religious law had gathered.

So they arrested him and led him to the high priest's residence, and Peter was following far behind.

and he put them in the prison where Joseph was, in the palace of Potiphar, the captain of the guard.

The shouting grew louder and louder, and the men were tugging at Paul from both sides, pulling him this way and that. Finally, the commander, fearing they would tear him apart, ordered his soldiers to take him away from them and bring him back to the fortress.

The LORD is God, shining upon us. Bring forward the sacrifice and put it on the altar.

Paul called one of the officers and said, "Take this young man to the commander. He has something important to tell him."
So the officer did, explaining, "Paul, the prisoner, called me over and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you."
The commander took him by the arm, led him aside, and asked, "What is it you want to tell me?"
Paul's nephew told him, "Some Jews are going to ask you to bring Paul before the Jewish high council tomorrow, pretending they want to get some more information.
But don't do it! There are more than forty men hiding along the way ready to jump him and kill him. They have vowed not to eat or drink until they kill him. They are ready, expecting you to agree to their request."
