- Herod was furious when he learned that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, because the wise men had told him the star first appeared to them about two years earlier.

- He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law. "Where did the prophets say the Messiah would be born?" he asked them.
- "In Bethlehem," they said, "for this is what the prophet wrote:
- 'O Bethlehem of Judah, you are not just a lowly village in Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.'"
- Then Herod sent a private message to the wise men, asking them to come see him. At this meeting he learned the exact time when they first saw the star.
Job 15:25

- Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together to discuss the situation. "What are we going to do?" they asked each other. "This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.
- If we leave him alone, the whole nation will follow him, and then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation."
- And one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said, "How can you be so stupid?
- Why should the whole nation be destroyed? Let this one man die for the people."
- This prophecy that Jesus should die for the entire nation came from Caiaphas in his position as high priest. He didn't think of it himself; he was inspired to say it.
Job 40:8
- Are you going to discredit my justice and condemn me so you can say you are right?
- Are you as strong as God, and can you thunder with a voice like his?
Ecclesiastes 9:3
- It seems so tragic that one fate comes to all. That is why people are not more careful to be good. Instead, they choose their own mad course, for they have no hope. There is nothing ahead but death anyway.
