48: If we leave him alone, the whole nation will follow him, and then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation."

As a result, you will become guilty of murdering all the godly people from righteous Abel to Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered in the Temple between the altar and the sanctuary.
I assure you, all the accumulated judgment of the centuries will break upon the heads of this very generation.
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God's messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me.
And now look, your house is left to you, empty and desolate.

But Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
For the days are coming when they will say, 'Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child and the breasts that have never nursed.'
People will beg the mountains to fall on them and the hills to bury them.
For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry? "

"How terrible it will be for you experts in religious law! For you hide the key to knowledge from the people. You don't enter the Kingdom yourselves, and you prevent others from entering."

Watch, for the day of the LORD is coming when your possessions will be plundered right in front of you!
On that day I will gather all the nations to fight against Jerusalem. The city will be taken, the houses plundered, and the women raped. Half the population will be taken away into captivity, and half will be left among the ruins of the city.

"Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, the man who is my partner, says the LORD Almighty. Strike down the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn against the lambs.
Two-thirds of the people in the land will be cut off and die, says the LORD. But a third will be left in the land.

"Didn't we tell you never again to teach in this man's name?" the high priest demanded. "Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about Jesus, and you intend to blame us for his death!"

For some of the Jews had killed their own prophets, and some even killed the Lord Jesus. Now they have persecuted us and driven us out. They displease God and oppose everyone
by trying to keep us from preaching the Good News to the Gentiles, for fear some might be saved. By doing this, they continue to pile up their sins. But the anger of God has caught up with them at last.

a fierce and heartless nation that shows no respect for the old and no pity for the young.
Its armies will devour your livestock and crops, and you will starve to death. They will leave you no grain, new wine, olive oil, calves, or lambs, bringing about your destruction.
They will lay siege to your cities until all the fortified walls in your land--the walls you trusted to protect you--are knocked down. They will attack all the towns in the land the LORD your God has given you.
The siege will be so severe that you will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you.
The most tenderhearted man among you will have no compassion for his own brother, his beloved wife, and his surviving children.

to tell everyone about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.

"When the owner of the vineyard returns," Jesus asked, "what do you think he will do to those farmers?"
The religious leaders replied, "He will put the wicked men to a horrible death and lease the vineyard to others who will give him his share of the crop after each harvest."
Then Jesus asked them, "Didn't you ever read this in the Scriptures? 'The stone rejected by the builders has now become the cornerstone. This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous to see.'

"So my advice is, leave these men alone. If they are teaching and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown.
But if it is of God, you will not be able to stop them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God."
The council accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.

"Then the king became furious. He sent out his army to destroy the murderers and burn their city.

The seed that fell on the hard path represents those who hear the message, but then the Devil comes and steals it away and prevents them from believing and being saved.

And all the people yelled back, "We will take responsibility for his death--we and our children!"

But as they came closer to Jerusalem and Jesus saw the city ahead, he began to cry.
"I wish that even today you would find the way of peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from you.
Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you.
They will crush you to the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you have rejected the opportunity God offered you."

"After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.
He will make a treaty with the people for a period of one set of seven, but after half this time, he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. Then as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the end that has been decreed is poured out on this defiler."

"And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived.
Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. Let those in Jerusalem escape, and those outside the city should not enter it for shelter.
For those will be days of God's vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled.
How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for mothers nursing their babies. For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people.
They will be brutally killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be conquered and trampled down by the Gentiles until the age of the Gentiles comes to an end.
