41: And many followed him. "John didn't do miracles," they remarked to one another, "but all his predictions about this man have come true."

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
He is the one I was talking about when I said, 'Soon a man is coming who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before I did.'

I didn't know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, 'When you see the Holy Spirit descending and resting upon someone, he is the one you are looking for. He is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Son of God. "

This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was Jesus' first display of his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

John's disciples came to him and said, "Teacher, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you said was the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going over there instead of coming here to us."
John replied, "God in heaven appoints each person's work.
You yourselves know how plainly I told you that I am not the Messiah. I am here to prepare the way for him--that is all.
The bride will go where the bridegroom is. A bridegroom's friend rejoices with him. I am the bridegroom's friend, and I am filled with joy at his success.
He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.
John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, 'Look, I am sending my messenger before you, and he will prepare your way before you.'
I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the most insignificant person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!"
When they heard this, all the people, including the unjust tax collectors, agreed that God's plan was right, for they had been baptized by John.
But the Pharisees and experts in religious law had rejected God's plan for them, for they had refused John's baptism.

One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God.

Jesus traveled throughout Galilee teaching in the synagogues, preaching everywhere the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed people who had every kind of sickness and disease.
News about him spread far beyond the borders of Galilee so that the sick were soon coming to be healed from as far away as Syria. And whatever their illness and pain, or if they were possessed by demons, or were epileptics, or were paralyzed--he healed them all.
Large crowds followed him wherever he went--people from Galilee, the Ten Towns, Jerusalem, from all over Judea, and from east of the Jordan River.

he said to his advisers, "This must be John the Baptist come back to life again! That is why he can do such miracles."

"I baptize with water those who turn from their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is far greater than I am--so much greater that I am not even worthy to be his slave. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
He is ready to separate the chaff from the grain with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, storing the grain in his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire."

Meanwhile, the crowds grew until thousands were milling about and crushing each other. Jesus turned first to his disciples and warned them, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees--beware of their hypocrisy.
