31: By his mighty acts he governs the people, giving them food in abundance.

but he never left himself without a witness. There were always his reminders, such as sending you rain and good crops and giving you food and joyful hearts."

He causes things to happen on earth, either as a punishment or as a sign of his unfailing love.

You send rain on the mountains from your heavenly home, and you fill the earth with the fruit of your labor.
You cause grass to grow for the cattle. You cause plants to grow for people to use. You allow them to produce food from the earth--
wine to make them glad, olive oil as lotion for their skin, and bread to give them strength.

Every one of these depends on you to give them their food as they need it.
When you supply it, they gather it. You open your hand to feed them, and they are satisfied.

"Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing. Everything on earth will die!

So Samuel called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain. And all the people were terrified of the LORD and of Samuel.

Do not forget that he led you through the great and terrifying wilderness with poisonous snakes and scorpions, where it was so hot and dry. He gave you water from the rock!

You take care of the earth and water it, making it rich and fertile. The rivers of God will not run dry; they provide a bountiful harvest of grain, for you have ordered it so.
You drench the plowed ground with rain, melting the clods and leveling the ridges. You soften the earth with showers and bless its abundant crops.
You crown the year with a bountiful harvest; even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.
The wilderness becomes a lush pasture, and the hillsides blossom with joy.
The meadows are clothed with flocks of sheep, and the valleys are carpeted with grain. They all shout and sing for joy!

For forty days the floods prevailed, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth.
As the waters rose higher and higher above the ground, the boat floated safely on the surface.
Finally, the water covered even the highest mountains on the earth,
standing more than twenty-two feet above the highest peaks.
All the living things on earth died--birds, domestic animals, wild animals, all kinds of small animals, and all the people.

"Have you visited the treasuries of the snow? Have you seen where the hail is made and stored?
I have reserved it for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war.

As the Amorites retreated down the road from Beth-horon, the LORD destroyed them with a terrible hailstorm that continued until they reached Azekah. The hail killed more of the enemy than the Israelites killed with the sword.

Then the LORD rained down fire and burning sulfur from the heavens on Sodom and Gomorrah.

So Moses lifted his staff toward the sky, and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and lightning struck the earth. The LORD sent a tremendous hailstorm against all the land of Egypt.
Never in all the history of Egypt had there been a storm like that, with such severe hail and continuous lightning.
It left all of Egypt in ruins. Everything left in the fields was destroyed--people, animals, and crops alike. Even all the trees were destroyed.

Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would really obey his commands.

Who makes the rain fall on barren land, in a desert where no one lives?
Who sends the rain that satisfies the parched ground and makes the tender grass spring up?

Those who fight against the LORD will be broken. He thunders against them from heaven; the LORD judges throughout the earth. He gives mighty strength to his king; he increases the might of his anointed one."

Just as Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines arrived for battle. But the LORD spoke with a mighty voice of thunder from heaven, and the Philistines were thrown into such confusion that the Israelites defeated them.
