10: He gets their attention and says they must turn away from evil.

Prove by the way you live that you have really turned from your sins and turned to God.

Seek the LORD while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near.
Let the people turn from their wicked deeds. Let them banish from their minds the very thought of doing wrong! Let them turn to the LORD that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

The Sovereign LORD has spoken to me, and I have listened. I do not rebel or turn away.

He whispers in their ear and terrifies them with his warning.
He causes them to change their minds; he keeps them from pride.
He keeps them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death.
Or God disciplines people with sickness and pain, with ceaseless aching in their bones.
They lose their appetite and do not care for even the most delicious food.

Wash yourselves and be clean! Let me no longer see your evil deeds. Give up your wicked ways.
Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the orphan. Fight for the rights of widows.
"Come now, let us argue this out," says the LORD. "No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you as white as wool.
If you will only obey me and let me help you, then you will have plenty to eat.
But if you keep turning away and refusing to listen, you will be destroyed by your enemies. I, the LORD, have spoken!"

But by means of their suffering, he rescues those who suffer. For he gets their attention through adversity.

"The LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, says: I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is good and leads you along the paths you should follow.

"I call to you, to all of you! I am raising my voice to all people.
How naive you are! Let me give you common sense. O foolish ones, let me give you understanding.

"You simpletons!" she cries. "How long will you go on being simpleminded? How long will you mockers relish your mocking? How long will you fools fight the facts?
Come here and listen to me! I'll pour out the spirit of wisdom upon you and make you wise.

The LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Even now, if you quit your evil ways, I will let you stay in your own land.
But do not be fooled by those who repeatedly promise your safety because the Temple of the LORD is here.
I will be merciful only if you stop your wicked thoughts and deeds and are fair to others;
and if you stop exploiting foreigners, orphans, and widows; and if you stop your murdering; and if you stop worshiping idols as you now do to your own harm.
Then I will let you stay in this land that I gave to your ancestors to keep forever.

This is what the LORD says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem: "Plow up the hard ground of your hearts! Do not waste your good seed among thorns.
Cleanse your minds and hearts before the LORD, or my anger will burn like an unquenchable fire because of all your sins.

One of them was Lydia from Thyatira, a merchant of expensive purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. As she listened to us, the Lord opened her heart, and she accepted what Paul was saying.

"Come home with me," she urges the simple. To those without good judgment, she says,
"Come, eat my food, and drink the wine I have mixed.
Leave your foolish ways behind, and begin to live; learn how to be wise."

"Therefore, I will judge each of you, O people of Israel, according to your actions, says the Sovereign LORD. Turn from your sins! Don't let them destroy you!
Put all your rebellion behind you, and get for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel?

Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, you hypocrites.

God overlooked people's former ignorance about these things, but now he commands everyone everywhere to turn away from idols and turn to him.

Again and again the LORD had sent his prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah: "Turn from all your evil ways. Obey my commands and laws, which are contained in the whole law that I commanded your ancestors and which I gave you through my servants the prophets."

"Yes, I will tell you of things that are entirely new, for I know so well what traitors you are. You have been rebels from your earliest childhood, rotten through and through.

You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand--you don't require burnt offerings or sin offerings.
