21: You have become cruel toward me. You persecute me with your great power.

was to watch me, and if I sinned, you would not forgive my iniquity.
If I am guilty, too bad for me. And even if I'm innocent, I am filled with shame and misery so that I can't hold my head high.
And if I hold my head high, you hunt me like a lion and display your awesome power against me.
Again and again you witness against me. You pour out an ever-increasing volume of anger upon me and bring fresh armies against me.

God hates me and tears angrily at my flesh. He gnashes his teeth at me and pierces me with his eyes.
People jeer and laugh at me. They slap my cheek in contempt. A mob gathers against me.
God has handed me over to sinners. He has tossed me into the hands of the wicked.
"I was living quietly until he broke me apart. He took me by the neck and dashed me to pieces. Then he set me up as his target.
His archers surrounded me, and his arrows pierced me without mercy. The ground is wet with my blood.

but it is God who has wronged me. I cannot defend myself, for I am like a city under siege.
"I cry out for help, but no one hears me. I protest, but there is no justice.
God has blocked my way and plunged my path into darkness.
He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head.

Would he merely argue with me in his greatness? No, he would give me a fair hearing.

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and in his good time he will honor you.

All your allies have left you and do not care about you anymore. I have wounded you cruelly, as though I were your enemy. For your sins are many, and your guilt is great.

What do you gain by oppressing me? Why do you reject me, the work of your own hands, while sending joy and prosperity to the wicked?

Have I sinned? What have I done to you, O watcher of all humanity? Why have you made me your target? Am I a burden to you?
Why not just pardon my sin and take away my guilt? For soon I will lie down in the dust and die. When you look for me, I will be gone."

Would you terrify a leaf that is blown by the wind? Would you chase a dry stalk of grass?
"You write bitter accusations against me and bring up all the sins of my youth.
You put my feet in stocks. You watch all my paths. You trace all my footprints.
I waste away like rotting wood, like a moth-eaten coat.

Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength.

Why must you persecute me as God does? Why aren't you satisfied with my anguish?
