4: For you are smearing me with lies. As doctors, you are worthless quacks.

Arrogant people have made up lies about me, but in truth I obey your commandments with all my heart.

Go up to Gilead to get ointment, O virgin daughter of Egypt! But your many medicines will bring you no healing.

Is there no medicine in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why is there no healing for the wounds of my people?

They offer superficial treatments for my people's mortal wound. They give assurances of peace when all is war.

"The truth remains that the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. The sparks of their fire will not glow.
The light in their tent will grow dark. The lamp hanging above them will be quenched.
The confident stride of the wicked will be shortened. Their own schemes will be their downfall.
"The wicked walk into a net. They fall into a pit that's been dug in the path.
A trap grabs them by the heel. A noose tightens around them.

Their imaginary dreams are flagrant lies that lead my people into sin. I did not send or appoint them, and they have no message at all for my people," says the LORD.

"You may cry for help, but no one listens. You may turn to the angels, but they give you no help.
Surely resentment destroys the fool, and jealousy kills the simple.
From my experience, I know that fools who turn from God may be successful for the moment, but then comes sudden disaster.
Their children are abandoned far from help, with no one to defend them.
Their harvests are stolen, and their wealth satisfies the thirst of many others, not themselves!

Does God twist justice? Does the Almighty twist what is right?
Your children obviously sinned against him, so their punishment was well deserved.

You, too, have proved to be of no help. You have seen my calamity, and you are afraid.

You have not taken care of the weak. You have not tended the sick or bound up the broken bones. You have not gone looking for those who have wandered away and are lost. Instead, you have ruled them with force and cruelty.

"For example, you must have lent money to your friend and then kept the clothing he gave you as a pledge. Yes, you stripped him to the bone.
You must have refused water for the thirsty and food for the hungry.
After all, you think the land belongs to the powerful and that those who are privileged have a right to it!
You must have sent widows away without helping them and crushed the strength of orphans.
That is why you are surrounded by traps and sudden fears.

"When Israel and Judah saw how sick they were, Israel turned to Assyria, to the great king there, but he could neither help nor cure them.

When Jesus heard this, he told them, "Healthy people don't need a doctor--sick people do. I have come to call sinners, not those who think they are already good enough."

There is no one to help you or bind up your injury. You are beyond the help of any medicine.

"Stop and think! Does the innocent person perish? When has the upright person been destroyed?
My experience shows that those who plant trouble and cultivate evil will harvest the same.
They perish by a breath from God. They vanish in a blast of his anger.
Though they are fierce young lions, they will all be broken and destroyed.
The fierce lion will starve, and the cubs of the lioness will be scattered.

"Look, I know your thoughts. I know the schemes you plot against me.
You will tell me of rich and wicked people who came to disaster because of their sins.
But I tell you to ask those who have been around, and they can tell you the truth.
Evil people are spared in times of calamity and are allowed to escape.
No one rebukes them openly. No one repays them for what they have done.

She had suffered a great deal from many doctors through the years and had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she was worse.
