48: The heavens and earth will rejoice, for out of the north will come destroying armies against Babylon," says the LORD.

Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done this wondrous thing. Shout, O earth! Break forth into song, O mountains and forests and every tree! For the LORD has redeemed Jacob and is glorified in Israel.

But you, O heaven, rejoice over her fate. And you also rejoice, O holy people of God and apostles and prophets! For at last God has judged her on your behalf.

For a nation will attack her from the north and bring such destruction that no one will live in her again. Everything will be gone; both people and animals will flee.

Yet even now, be free from your captivity! Leave Babylon and the Babylonians, singing as you go! Shout to the ends of the earth that the LORD has redeemed his servants, the people of Israel.

Sing for joy, O heavens! Rejoice, O earth! Burst into song, O mountains! For the LORD has comforted his people and will have compassion on them in their sorrow.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs, and they became blood.
And I heard the angel who had authority over all water saying, "You are just in sending this judgment, O Holy One, who is and who always was.
For your holy people and your prophets have been killed, and their blood was poured out on the earth. So you have given their murderers blood to drink. It is their just reward."
And I heard a voice from the altar saying, "Yes, Lord God Almighty, your punishments are true and just."

The godly will rejoice when they see injustice avenged. They will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked.
Then at last everyone will say, "There truly is a reward for those who live for God; surely there is a God who judges justly here on earth."

For look, I am raising up an army of great nations from the north. I will bring them against Babylon to attack her, and she will be captured. The enemies' arrows will go straight to the mark; they will not miss!

The whole city celebrates when the godly succeed; they shout for joy when the godless die.

Then I saw in heaven another significant event, and it was great and marvelous. Seven angels were holding the seven last plagues, which would bring God's wrath to completion.
I saw before me what seemed to be a crystal sea mixed with fire. And on it stood all the people who had been victorious over the beast and his statue and the number representing his name. They were all holding harps that God had given them.
And they were singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb: "Great and marvelous are your actions, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations.
Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous deeds have been revealed."

"Look! A great army is marching from the north! A great nation and many kings are rising against you from far-off lands.

The LORD has vindicated us. Come, let us announce in Jerusalem everything the LORD our God has done.
Sharpen the arrows! Lift up the shields! For the LORD has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes to march against Babylon and destroy her. This is his vengeance against those who desecrated his Temple.

After this, I heard the sound of a vast crowd in heaven shouting, "Hallelujah! Salvation is from our God. Glory and power belong to him alone.
His judgments are just and true. He has punished the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and he has avenged the murder of his servants."
Again and again their voices rang, "Hallelujah! The smoke from that city ascends forever and forever!"
Then the twenty-four elders and the four living beings fell down and worshiped God, who was sitting on the throne. They cried out, "Amen! Hallelujah!"
And from the throne came a voice that said, "Praise our God, all his servants, from the least to the greatest, all who fear him."
