2: The captain of the guard called for Jeremiah and said, "The LORD your God has brought this disaster on this land,
Deuteronomy 29:24
- The surrounding nations will ask, `Why has the LORD done this to his land? Why was he so angry?'
- "And they will be told, `This happened because the people of the land broke the covenant they made with the LORD, the God of their ancestors, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
- They turned to serve and worship other gods that were foreign to them, gods that the LORD had not designated for them.
- That is why the LORD's anger burned against this land, bringing down on it all the curses recorded in this book.
- In great anger and fury the LORD uprooted his people from their land and exiled them to another land, where they still live today!'
Jeremiah 22:8
- People from many nations will pass by the ruins of this city and say to one another, `Why did the LORD destroy such a great city?'
- And the answer will be, `Because they violated their covenant with the LORD their God by worshiping other gods.'"

- And the answer will be, `Because his people abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt, and they worshiped other gods instead. That is why he brought all these disasters upon them.'"

Lamentations 2:15
- All who pass by jeer at you. They scoff and insult Jerusalem, saying, "Is this the city called `Most Beautiful in All the World' and `Joy of All the Earth'?"
- All your enemies deride you. They scoff and grind their teeth and say, "We have destroyed her at last! Long have we awaited this day, and it is finally here!"
- But it is the LORD who did it just as he warned. He has fulfilled the promises of disaster he made long ago. He has destroyed Jerusalem without mercy and caused her enemies to rejoice over her and boast of their power.
