10: "Many rulers have ravaged my vineyard, trampling down the vines and turning all its beauty into a barren wilderness.

How briefly your holy people possessed the holy place, and now our enemies have destroyed it.

Now I will sing a song for the one I love about his vineyard: My beloved has a vineyard on a rich and fertile hill.
He plowed the land, cleared its stones, and planted it with choice vines. In the middle he built a watchtower and carved a winepress in the nearby rocks. Then he waited for a harvest of sweet grapes, but the grapes that grew were wild and sour.
"Now, you people of Jerusalem and Judah, you have heard the case; you be the judges.
What more could I have done to cultivate a rich harvest? Why did my vineyard give me wild grapes when I expected sweet ones?
Now this is what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will tear down its fences and let it be destroyed. I will break down its walls and let the animals trample it.

"I thought to myself, `I would love to treat you as my own children!' I wanted nothing more than to give you this beautiful land--the finest inheritance in the world. I looked forward to your calling me `Father,' and I thought you would never turn away from me again.

"I will send disaster upon the leaders of my people--the shepherds of my sheep--for they have destroyed and scattered the very ones they were expected to care for," says the LORD.

Now Jesus turned to the people again and told them this story: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it out to tenant farmers, and moved to another country to live for several years.
At grape-picking time, he sent one of his servants to collect his share of the crop. But the farmers attacked the servant, beat him up, and sent him back empty-handed.
So the owner sent another servant, but the same thing happened; he was beaten up and treated shamefully, and he went away empty-handed.
A third man was sent and the same thing happened. He, too, was wounded and chased away.
"'What will I do?' the owner asked himself. 'I know! I'll send my cherished son. Surely they will respect him.'

Enemy shepherds will surround you. They will set up camp around the city and divide your pastures for their flocks.

You brought us from Egypt as though we were a tender vine; you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us into your land.
You cleared the ground for us, and we took root and filled the land.
The mountains were covered with our shade; the mighty cedars were covered with our branches.
We spread our branches west to the Mediterranean Sea, our limbs east to the Euphrates River.
But now, why have you broken down our walls so that all who pass may steal our fruit?

But do not measure the outer courtyard, for it has been turned over to the nations. They will trample the holy city for 42 months.

The enemy has plundered her completely, taking everything precious that she owns. She has seen foreigners violate her sacred Temple, the place the LORD had forbidden them to enter.
Her people groan as they search for bread. They have sold their treasures for food to stay alive. "O LORD, look," she mourns, "and see how I am despised.

I will gather together all the armies of the north under King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, whom I have appointed as my deputy. I will bring them all against this land and its people and against the other nations near you. I will completely destroy you and make you an object of horror and contempt and a ruin forever.

That is why I have disgraced your priests and assigned Israel a future of complete destruction and shame.

All the officers of the Babylonian army came in and sat in triumph at the Middle Gate: Nergal-sharezer of Samgar, and Nebo-sarsekim, a chief officer, and Nergal-sharezer, the king's adviser, and many others.
