13: Then he stood and shouted in Hebrew to the people on the wall, "Listen to this message from the great king of Assyria!

The Assyrian officials who brought the letters shouted this in the Hebrew language to the people gathered on the walls of the city, trying to terrify them so it would be easier to capture the city.

Therefore, the Lord will overwhelm them with a mighty flood from the Euphrates River--the king of Assyria and all his mighty armies.

Goliath stood and shouted across to the Israelites, "Do you need a whole army to settle this? Choose someone to fight for you, and I will represent the Philistines. We will settle this dispute in single combat!
If your man is able to kill me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be our slaves!
I defy the armies of Israel! Send me a man who will fight with me!"
When Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified and deeply shaken.

He will say, `Each of my princes will soon be a king, ruling a conquered land.
We will destroy Calno just as we did Carchemish. Hamath will fall before us as Arpad did. And we will destroy Samaria just as we did Damascus.
Yes, we have finished off many a kingdom whose gods were far greater than those in Jerusalem and Samaria.
So when we have defeated Samaria and her gods, we will destroy Jerusalem with hers.'"
After the Lord has used the king of Assyria to accomplish his purposes in Jerusalem, he will turn against the king of Assyria and punish him--for he is proud and arrogant.

They are without pity. Listen to their boasting.
They track me down, surround me, and throw me to the ground.
They are like hungry lions, eager to tear me apart--like young lions in hiding, waiting for their chance.
Arise, O LORD! Stand against them and bring them to their knees! Rescue me from the wicked with your sword!

"Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble those who are proud."

You are as Assyria was--a great and mighty nation. Assyria, too, was once like a cedar of Lebanon, full of thick branches that cast deep forest shade with its top high among the clouds.
Deep springs watered it and helped it to grow tall and luxuriant. The water was so abundant that there was enough for all the trees nearby.
This great tree towered above all the other trees around it. It prospered and grew long thick branches because of all the water at its roots.
The birds nested in its branches, and in its shade all the wild animals gave birth to their young. All the great nations of the world lived in its shadow.
It was strong and beautiful, for its roots went deep into abundant water.

Then the Assyrian king's personal representative sent this message to King Hezekiah: "This is what the great king of Assyria says: What are you trusting in that makes you so confident?

They scoff and speak only evil; in their pride they seek to crush others.
They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut throughout the earth.

Then he stood and shouted in Hebrew to the people on the wall, "Listen to this message from the great king of Assyria!
This is what the king says: Don't let King Hezekiah deceive you. He will never be able to rescue you from my power.
Don't let him fool you into trusting in the LORD by saying, `The LORD will rescue us! This city will never be handed over to the Assyrian king.'
"Don't listen to Hezekiah! These are the terms the king of Assyria is offering: Make peace with me--open the gates and come out. Then I will allow each of you to continue eating from your own garden and drinking from your own well.
Then I will arrange to take you to another land like this one--a country with bountiful harvests of grain and wine, bread and vineyards, olive trees and honey--a land of plenty. Choose life instead of death! "Don't listen to Hezekiah when he tries to mislead you by saying, `The LORD will rescue us!'
