10: Where now is your king? Why don't you call on him for help? Where are all the leaders of the land? You asked for them, now let them save you!

The people have appointed kings and princes, but not with my consent. By making idols for themselves from their silver and gold, they have brought about their own destruction.

"Look," they told him, "you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king like all the other nations have."
Samuel was very upset with their request and went to the LORD for advice.

Then they will say, "We have no king because we didn't fear the LORD. But what's the difference? What could a king do for us anyway?"

"I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from your slavery in Egypt. You have no God but me, for there is no other savior.

When the people of Israel learned of Jeroboam's return from Egypt, they called an assembly and made him king over all Israel. So only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the family of David.

Listen to the weeping of my people; it can be heard all across the land. "Has the LORD abandoned Jerusalem?" the people ask. "Is her King no longer there?Oh, why have they angered me with their carved idols and worthless gods?" asks the LORD.

The LORD is king forever and ever! Let those who worship other gods be swept from the land.

And the LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day there will be one LORD--his name alone will be worshiped.

For the LORD is our judge, our lawgiver, and our king. He will care for us and save us.

Yes, our protection comes from the LORD, and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king.

Then he will ask, `Where are their gods, the rocks they fled to for refuge?
Where now are those gods, who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their offerings? Let those gods arise and help you! Let them provide you with shelter!
Look now; I myself am he! There is no god other than me! I am the one who kills and gives life; I am the one who wounds and heals; no one delivers from my power!

Then the LORD raised up judges to rescue the Israelites from their enemies.
Yet Israel did not listen to the judges but prostituted themselves to other gods, bowing down to them. How quickly they turned away from the path of their ancestors, who had walked in obedience to the LORD's commands.
Whenever the LORD placed a judge over Israel, he was with that judge and rescued the people from their enemies throughout the judge's lifetime. For the LORD took pity on his people, who were burdened by oppression and suffering.

But the people refused to listen to Samuel's warning. "Even so, we still want a king," they said.
"We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will govern us and lead us into battle."

Why don't you call on these gods you have made? When danger comes, let them save you if they can! For you have as many gods as there are cities and towns in Judah.

Then Hoshea conspired against the king of Assyria by asking King So of Egypt to help him shake free of Assyria's power and by refusing to pay the annual tribute to Assyria. When the king of Assyria discovered this treachery, he arrested him and put him in prison for his rebellion.

Then the LORD sent Gideon, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel to save you, and you lived in safety.
"But when you were afraid of Nahash, the king of Ammon, you came to me and said that you wanted a king to reign over you, even though the LORD your God was already your king.
