19: For they heard an awesome trumpet blast and a voice with a message so terrible that they begged God to stop speaking.

For this is what you yourselves requested of the LORD your God when you were assembled at Mount Sinai. You begged that you might never again have to listen to the voice of the LORD your God or see this blazing fire for fear you would die.

And the LORD spoke to you from the fire. You heard his words but didn't see his form; there was only a voice.

Has any nation ever heard the voice of God speaking from fire--as you did--and survived?

The LORD did not make this covenant long ago with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive today.
The LORD spoke to you face to face from the heart of the fire on the mountain.
I stood as an intermediary between you and the LORD, for you were afraid of the fire and did not climb the mountain. He spoke to me, and I passed his words on to you. This is what he said:
" `I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt.
" `Do not worship any other gods besides me.

On the morning of the third day, there was a powerful thunder and lightning storm, and a dense cloud came down upon the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram's horn, and all the people trembled.
Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
All Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the LORD had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain shook with a violent earthquake.
As the horn blast grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God thundered his reply for all to hear.

It will happen in a moment, in the blinking of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, the Christians who have died will be raised with transformed bodies. And then we who are living will be transformed so that we will never die.

Then God instructed the people as follows:
"I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt.
"Do not worship any other gods besides me.
"Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish.
You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations.

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves.

They said, `The LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen God speaking to humans, and yet we live!
But now, why should we die? If the LORD our God speaks to us again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome fire.
Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire and yet survive?
You go and listen to what the LORD our God says. Then come and tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey.'

And the LORD said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel: You are witnesses that I have spoken to you from heaven.
