15: This is how I will test your story. I swear by the life of Pharaoh that you will not leave Egypt unless your youngest brother comes here.

But I say, don't make any vows! If you say, 'By heaven!' it is a sacred vow because heaven is God's throne.
And if you say, 'By the earth!' it is a sacred vow because the earth is his footstool. And don't swear, 'By Jerusalem!' for Jerusalem is the city of the great King.
Don't even swear, 'By my head!' for you can't turn one hair white or black.
Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't.' Your word is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.

Joseph recognized them instantly, but he pretended to be a stranger. "Where are you from?" he demanded roughly. "From the land of Canaan," they replied. "We have come to buy grain."

You must fear the LORD your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his name.

But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned for it.

"How can I pardon you? For even your children have turned from me. They have sworn by gods that are not gods at all! I fed my people until they were fully satisfied. But they thanked me by committing adultery and lining up at the city's brothels.

But bring your youngest brother back to me. In this way, I will know whether or not you are telling me the truth. If you are, I will spare you." To this they agreed.

So we returned to our father and told him what you had said.

"The man who is ruler over the land spoke very roughly to us," they told him. "He took us for spies.

"Blind guides! How terrible it will be for you! For you say that it means nothing to swear 'by God's Temple'--you can break that oath. But then you say that it is binding to swear 'by the gold in the Temple.'
Blind fools! Which is greater, the gold, or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?
And you say that to take an oath 'by the altar' can be broken, but to swear 'by the gifts on the altar' is binding!
How blind! For which is greater, the gift on the altar, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
When you swear 'by the altar,' you are swearing by it and by everything on it.

Then David took an oath before Jonathan and said, "Your father knows perfectly well about our friendship, so he has said to himself, `I won't tell Jonathan--why should I hurt him?' But I swear to you that I am only a step away from death! I swear it by the LORD and by your own soul!"

"Yes, you are!" he insisted. "You have come to discover how vulnerable the famine has made us."

Even when they are under oath, saying, `As surely as the LORD lives,' they all tell lies!"
