9: But Sarah saw Ishmael--the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar--making fun of Isaac.

And we who are born of the Holy Spirit are persecuted by those who want us to keep the law, just as Isaac, the child of promise, was persecuted by Ishmael, the son of the slave-wife.

But Sarai, Abram's wife, had no children. So Sarai took her servant, an Egyptian woman named Hagar,

Their taunts pierce me like a fatal wound. They scoff, "Where is this God of yours?"

Sanballat was very angry when he learned that we were rebuilding the wall. He flew into a rage and mocked the Jews,
saying in front of his friends and the Samarian army officers, "What does this bunch of poor, feeble Jews think they are doing? Do they think they can build the wall in a day if they offer enough sacrifices? Look at those charred stones they are pulling out of the rubbish and using again!"
Tobiah the Ammonite, who was standing beside him, remarked, "That stone wall would collapse if even a fox walked along the top of it!"
Then I prayed, "Hear us, O our God, for we are being mocked. May their scoffing fall back on their own heads, and may they themselves become captives in a foreign land!
Do not ignore their guilt. Do not blot out their sins, for they have provoked you to anger here in the presence of the builders."

You have caused all our neighbors to mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to the nations around us.
You have made us the butt of their jokes; we are scorned by the whole world.

And now in the midst of her sadness and wandering, Jerusalem remembers her ancient splendor. But then she fell to her enemy, and there was no one to help her. Her enemy struck her down and laughed as she fell.

Even children are known by the way they act, whether their conduct is pure and right.

The messengers went from town to town throughout Ephraim and Manasseh and as far as the territory of Zebulun. But most of the people just laughed at the messengers and made fun of them.

But the people mocked these messengers of God and despised their words. They scoffed at the prophets until the LORD's anger could no longer be restrained and there was no remedy.

The Scriptures say that Abraham had two sons, one from his slave-wife and one from his freeborn wife.

So Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian servant and gave her to Abram as a wife. (This happened ten years after Abram first arrived in the land of Canaan.)
So Abram slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When Hagar knew she was pregnant, she began to treat her mistress Sarai with contempt.
Then Sarai said to Abram, "It's all your fault! Now this servant of mine is pregnant, and she despises me, though I myself gave her the privilege of sleeping with you. The LORD will make you pay for doing this to me! "
Abram replied, "Since she is your servant, you may deal with her as you see fit." So Sarai treated her harshly, and Hagar ran away.

As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will cause him to multiply and become a great nation. Twelve princes will be among his descendants.

Elisha left Jericho and went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, a group of boys from the town began mocking and making fun of him. "Go away, you baldhead!" they chanted. "Go away, you baldhead!"
Elisha turned around and looked at them, and he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of them.

Some were mocked, and their backs were cut open with whips. Others were chained in dungeons.

"But now I am mocked by those who are younger than I, by young men whose fathers are not worthy to run with my sheepdogs.
