7: Our whole history has been one of great sin. That is why we and our kings and our priests have been at the mercy of the pagan kings of the land. We have been killed, captured, robbed, and disgraced, just as we are today.

2 Chronicles 29:6

  1. Our ancestors were unfaithful and did what was evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned the LORD and his Temple; they turned their backs on him.

Daniel 9:5

  1. But we have sinned and done wrong. We have rebelled against you and scorned your commands and regulations.

  3. Every curse written against us in the law of Moses has come true. All the troubles he predicted have taken place. But we have refused to seek mercy from the LORD our God by turning from our sins and recognizing his truth.
  4. The LORD has brought against us the disaster he prepared, for we did not obey him, and the LORD our God is just in everything he does.

Numbers 32:14

  1. But here you are, a brood of sinners, doing exactly the same thing! You are making the LORD even angrier with Israel.

Deuteronomy 29:22

  1. "Then the generations to come, both your own descendants and the foreigners who come from distant lands, will see the devastation of the land and the diseases the LORD will send against it.
  2. They will find its soil turned into sulfur and salt, with nothing planted and nothing growing, not even a blade of grass. It will be just like Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his anger.
  3. The surrounding nations will ask, `Why has the LORD done this to his land? Why was he so angry?'
  4. "And they will be told, `This happened because the people of the land broke the covenant they made with the LORD, the God of their ancestors, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.
  5. They turned to serve and worship other gods that were foreign to them, gods that the LORD had not designated for them.

Nehemiah 9:36

  1. "So now today we are slaves here in the land of plenty that you gave to our ancestors! We are slaves among all this abundance!
  2. The lush produce of this land piles up in the hands of the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They have power over us and our cattle. We serve them at their pleasure, and we are in great misery.

Leviticus 26:14

  1. But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation.
  2. They stirred up his jealousy by worshiping foreign gods; they provoked his fury with detestable acts.
  3. They offered sacrifices to demons, non-gods, to gods they had not known before, to gods only recently arrived, to gods their ancestors had never feared.

Nehemiah 9:30

  1. In your love, you were patient with them for many years. You sent your Spirit, who, through the prophets, warned them about their sins. But still they wouldn't listen! So once again you allowed the pagan inhabitants of the land to conquer them.

Psalms 106:6

  1. Both we and our ancestors have sinned. We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly!
  2. Our ancestors in Egypt were not impressed by the LORD's miracles. They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea.

Deuteronomy 30:17

  2. then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.

Deuteronomy 28:15

  1. "But if you refuse to listen to the LORD your God and do not obey all the commands and laws I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overwhelm you:
  2. You will be cursed in your towns and in the country.
  3. You will be cursed with baskets empty of fruit, and with kneading bowls empty of bread.

  5. You will be cursed wherever you go, both in coming and in going.

2 Kings 17:5

  1. Then the king of Assyria invaded the entire land, and for three years he besieged Samaria.
  2. Finally, in the ninth year of King Hoshea's reign, Samaria fell, and the people of Israel were exiled to Assyria. They were settled in colonies in Halah, along the banks of the Habor River in Gozan, and among the cities of the Medes.
  3. This disaster came upon the nation of Israel because the people worshiped other gods, sinning against the LORD their God, who had brought them safely out of their slavery in Egypt.
  4. They had imitated the practices of the pagan nations the LORD had driven from the land before them, as well as the practices the kings of Israel had introduced.

1 Samuel 12:15

  1. But if you rebel against the LORD's commands and refuse to listen to him, then his hand will be as heavy upon you as it was upon your ancestors.

Deuteronomy 31:20

  1. For I will bring them into the land I swore to give their ancestors--a land flowing with milk and honey. There they will become prosperous; they will eat all the food they want and become well nourished. Then they will begin to worship other gods; they will despise me and break my covenant.
  2. Then great disasters will come down on them, and this song will stand as evidence against them, for it will never be forgotten by their descendants. I know what these people are like, even before they have entered the land I swore to give them."
  3. So that very day Moses wrote down the words of the song and taught it to the Israelites.

2 Kings 24:1

  1. During Jehoiakim's reign, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon invaded the land of Judah. Jehoiakim surrendered and paid him tribute for three years but then rebelled.
  2. Then the LORD sent bands of Babylonian, Aramean, Moabite, and Ammonite raiders against Judah to destroy it, just as the LORD had promised through his prophets.
  3. These disasters happened to Judah according to the LORD's command. He had decided to remove Judah from his presence because of the many sins of Manasseh.
  4. He had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD would not forgive this.

Matthew 23:30

  1. Then you say, 'We never would have joined them in killing the prophets.'
  2. "In saying that, you are accusing yourselves of being the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
  3. Go ahead. Finish what they started.
  4. Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of hell?

2 Chronicles 36:16

  1. But the people mocked these messengers of God and despised their words. They scoffed at the prophets until the LORD's anger could no longer be restrained and there was no remedy.
  2. So the LORD brought the king of Babylon against them. The Babylonians killed Judah's young men, even chasing after them into the Temple. They had no pity on the people, killing both young and old, men and women, healthy and sick. God handed them all over to Nebuchadnezzar.
  3. The king also took home to Babylon all the utensils, large and small, used in the Temple of God, and the treasures from both the LORD's Temple and the royal palace. He also took with him all the royal princes.
  4. Then his army set fire to the Temple of God, broke down the walls of Jerusalem, burned all the palaces, and completely destroyed everything of value.

Zechariah 1:4

  1. Do not be like your ancestors who would not listen when the earlier prophets said to them, `This is what the LORD Almighty says: Turn from your evil ways and stop all your evil practices.'
  2. "Your ancestors and their prophets are now long dead.

Deuteronomy 4:25

  2. then I will uproot the people of Israel from this land I have given them. I will reject this Temple that I have set apart to honor my name. I will make Israel an object of mockery and ridicule among the nations.

Lamentations 5:7

  1. It was our ancestors who sinned, but they died before the hand of judgment fell. We have suffered the punishment they deserved!

2 Kings 18:9

  1. During the fourth year of Hezekiah's reign, which was the seventh year of King Hoshea's reign in Israel, King Shalmaneser of Assyria attacked Israel and began a siege on the city of Samaria.
  2. Three years later, during the sixth year of King Hezekiah's reign and the ninth year of King Hoshea's reign in Israel, Samaria fell.
  3. At that time the king of Assyria deported the Israelites to Assyria and put them in colonies in Halah, along the banks of the Habor River in Gozan, and among the cities of the Medes.
  4. For they had refused to listen to the LORD their God. Instead, they had violated his covenant--all the laws the LORD had given through his servant Moses.

Acts 7:51

  1. "You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? But your ancestors did, and so do you!
  2. Name one prophet your ancestors didn't persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One--the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered.
