2 Kings 17:9

  1. The people of Israel had also secretly done many things that were not pleasing to the LORD their God. They built pagan shrines for themselves in all their towns, from the smallest outpost to the largest walled city.
  2. They set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles at the top of every hill and under every green tree.
  3. They burned incense at the shrines, just like the nations the LORD had driven from the land ahead of them. So the people of Israel had done many evil things, arousing the LORD's anger.
  4. Yes, they worshiped idols, despite the LORD's specific and repeated warnings.
  5. Again and again the LORD had sent his prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah: "Turn from all your evil ways. Obey my commands and laws, which are contained in the whole law that I commanded your ancestors and which I gave you through my servants the prophets."

Jeremiah 5:25

  1. Your wickedness has deprived you of these wonderful blessings. Your sin has robbed you of all these good things.
  2. "Among my people are wicked men who lie in wait for victims like a hunter hiding in a blind. They are continually setting traps for other people.
  3. Like a cage filled with birds, their homes are filled with evil plots. And the result? Now they are great and rich.
  4. They are well fed and well groomed, and there is no limit to their wicked deeds. They refuse justice to orphans and deny the rights of the poor.
  5. Should I not punish them for this?" asks the LORD. "Should I not avenge myself against a nation such as this?

  1. The king and the prince will stand helpless, weeping in despair, and the people's hands will tremble with fear. I will bring against them the evil they have done to others, and they will receive the punishment they so richly deserve. Then they will know that I am the LORD!"

  1. Your princes plot conspiracies just as lions stalk their prey. They devour innocent people, seizing treasures and extorting wealth. They increase the number of widows in the land.

And they do not teach my people the difference between what is ceremonially clean and unclean. They disregard my Sabbath days so that my holy name is greatly dishonored among them.
  3. Your leaders are like wolves, who tear apart their victims. They actually destroy people's lives for profit!
  4. And your prophets announce false visions and speak false messages. They say, `My message is from the Sovereign LORD,' when the LORD hasn't spoken a single word to them. They repair cracked walls with whitewash!
  5. Even common people oppress the poor, rob the needy, and deprive foreigners of justice.

Psalms 83:17

  1. Let them be ashamed and terrified forever. Make them failures in everything they do,
  2. until they learn that you alone are called the LORD, that you alone are the Most High, supreme over all the earth.
