29: But I will not do this all in one year because the land would become a wilderness, and the wild animals would become too many to control.

Deuteronomy 7:22

  1. The LORD your God will drive those nations out ahead of you little by little. You will not clear them away all at once, for if you did, the wild animals would multiply too quickly for you.

Judges 3:1

  1. The LORD left certain nations in the land to test those Israelites who had not participated in the wars of Canaan.
  2. He did this to teach warfare to generations of Israelites who had no experience in battle.
  3. These were the nations: the Philistines (those living under the five Philistine rulers), all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the hill country of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath.
  4. These people were left to test the Israelites--to see whether they would obey the commands the LORD had given to their ancestors through Moses.

  1. But the descendants of Manasseh were unable to occupy these towns. They could not drive out the Canaanites who continued to live there.
  2. Later on, however, when the Israelites became strong enough, they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves. But they did not drive them out of the land.
