18: You will be cursed with few children and barren fields. You will be cursed with infertile herds and flocks.

You will be blessed with many children and productive fields. You will be blessed with fertile herds and flocks.

May his children become fatherless, and may his wife become a widow.
May his children wander as beggars; may they be evicted from their ruined homes.
May creditors seize his entire estate, and strangers take all he has earned.
Let no one be kind to him; let no one pity his fatherless children.
May all his offspring die. May his family name be blotted out in a single generation.

I will completely destroy your food supply, so the bread from one oven will have to be stretched to feed ten families. They will ration your food by weight, and even if you have food to eat, you will not be satisfied.

I will break down your arrogant spirit by making the skies above as unyielding as iron and the earth beneath as hard as bronze.
All your work will be for nothing, for your land will yield no crops, and your trees will bear no fruit.

I will rebuke your descendants and splatter your faces with the dung of your festival sacrifices, and I will add you to the dung heap.

"O LORD, think about this!" Jerusalem cries. "You are doing this to your own people! Should mothers eat their little children, those they once bounced on their knees? Should priests and prophets die within the Lord's Temple?

Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vine; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty,

The glory of Israel will fly away like a bird, for your children will die at birth or perish in the womb or never even be conceived.
Even if your children do survive to grow up, I will take them from you. It will be a terrible day when I turn away and leave you alone.
I have watched Israel become as beautiful and pleasant as Tyre. But now Israel will bring out her children to be slaughtered."
O LORD, what should I request for your people? I will ask for wombs that don't give birth and breasts that give no milk.

For the days are coming when they will say, 'Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child and the breasts that have never nursed.'
People will beg the mountains to fall on them and the hills to bury them.

Their roots will dry up, and their branches will wither.
All memory of their existence will perish from the earth. No one will remember them.
They will be thrust from light into darkness, driven from the world.
They will have neither children nor grandchildren, nor any survivor in their home country.

I have cried until the tears no longer come. My heart is broken, my spirit poured out, as I see what has happened to my people. Little children and tiny babies are fainting and dying in the streets.
"Mama, we want food," they cry, and then collapse in their mothers' arms. Their lives ebb away like the life of a warrior wounded in battle.

You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations.
