13: Return the cloak to its owner by sunset so your neighbor can sleep in it and bless you. And the LORD your God will count it as a righteous act.

For we are righteous when we obey all the commands the LORD our God has given us.'

" `O King Nebuchadnezzar, please listen to me. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past by being merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.'

If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge of repayment, you must return it by nightfall.
Your neighbor will need it to stay warm during the night. If you do not return it and your neighbor cries out to me for help, then I will hear, for I am very merciful.

Pay them their wages each day before sunset because they are poor and are counting on it. Otherwise they might cry out to the LORD against you, and it would be counted against you as sin.

Suppose he is a merciful creditor, not keeping the items given in pledge by poor debtors, and does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for people in need.

Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrupt us.

For there will be no mercy for you if you have not been merciful to others. But if you have been merciful, then God's mercy toward you will win out over his judgment against you.
Dear brothers and sisters, what's the use of saying you have faith if you don't prove it by your actions? That kind of faith can't save anyone.
Suppose you see a brother or sister who needs food or clothing,
and you say, "Well, good-bye and God bless you; stay warm and eat well"--but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?
So you see, it isn't enough just to have faith. Faith that doesn't show itself by good deeds is no faith at all--it is dead and useless.

For instance, they might give back a borrower's pledge, return what they have stolen, and obey my life-giving laws, no longer doing what is evil. If they do this, then they will surely live and not die.

oppresses the poor and helpless, steals from debtors by refusing to let them redeem what they have given in pledge, worships idols and takes part in loathsome practices,

"All who heard of me praised me. All who saw me spoke well of me.
For I helped the poor in their need and the orphans who had no one to help them.
I helped those who had lost hope, and they blessed me. And I caused the widows' hearts to sing for joy.

And "don't sin by letting anger gain control over you." Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry,

They give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will never be forgotten. They will have influence and honor.

All night they lie naked in the cold, without clothing or covering.
They are soaked by mountain showers, and they huddle against the rocks for want of a home.

"Have I refused to help the poor, or crushed the hopes of widows who looked to me for help?
Have I been stingy with my food and refused to share it with hungry orphans?
No, from childhood I have cared for orphans, and all my life I have cared for widows.
Whenever I saw someone who was homeless and without clothes,
did they not praise me for providing wool clothing to keep them warm?

"If you do these things, your salvation will come like the dawn. Yes, your healing will come quickly. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind.

Do not be mean-spirited and refuse someone a loan because the year of release is close at hand. If you refuse to make the loan and the needy person cries out to the LORD, you will be considered guilty of sin.
Give freely without begrudging it, and the LORD your God will bless you in everything you do.

and does not exploit the poor, but instead is fair to debtors and does not rob them. And suppose this son feeds the hungry, provides clothes for the needy,

And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD declared him righteous because of his faith.

You will be glorifying God through your generous gifts. For your generosity to them will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ.
And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the wonderful grace of God shown through you.

At their religious festivals, they lounge around in clothing stolen from their debtors. In the house of their god, they present offerings of wine purchased with stolen money.

May the Lord show special kindness to Onesiphorus and all his family because he often visited and encouraged me. He was never ashamed of me because I was in prison.
When he came to Rome, he searched everywhere until he found me.
May the Lord show him special kindness on the day of Christ's return. And you know how much he helped me at Ephesus.
