3: All that time I had eaten no rich food or meat, had drunk no wine, and had used no fragrant oils.

Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night fasting. He refused his usual entertainment and couldn't sleep at all that night.

You trample the poor and steal what little they have through taxes and unfair rent. Therefore, you will never live in the beautiful stone houses you are building. You will never drink wine from the lush vineyards you are planting.

When he returns again to Egypt, he will carry back their idols with him, along with priceless gold and silver dishes. For some years afterward he will leave the king of the north alone.

Therefore, a curse consumes the earth and its people. They are left desolate, destroyed by fire. Few will be left alive.
All the joys of life will be gone. The grape harvest will fail, and there will be no wine. The merrymakers will sigh and mourn.
The clash of tambourines will be stilled; the happy cries of celebration will be heard no more. The melodious chords of the harp will be silent.
Gone are the joys of wine and song; strong drink now turns bitter in the mouth.
The city writhes in chaos; every home is locked to keep out looters.

Now Mephibosheth, Saul's grandson, arrived from Jerusalem to meet the king. He had not washed his feet or clothes nor trimmed his beard since the day the king left Jerusalem.

Loot the silver! Plunder the gold! There seems no end to Nineveh's many treasures--its vast, uncounted wealth.

I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.
