26: As for Philip, an angel of the Lord said to him, "Go south down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza."

But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them,

For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me,

But angels are only servants. They are spirits sent from God to care for those who will receive salvation.

Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people's worship instead of giving the glory to God. So he was consumed with worms and died.

They said, "We were sent by Cornelius, a Roman officer. He is a devout man who fears the God of Israel and is well respected by all the Jews. A holy angel instructed him to send for you so you can go to his house and give him a message."

So Peter left the cell, following the angel. But all the time he thought it was a vision. He didn't realize it was really happening.
They passed the first and second guard posts and came to the iron gate to the street, and this opened to them all by itself. So they passed through and started walking down the street, and then the angel suddenly left him.
Peter finally realized what had happened. "It's really true!" he said to himself. "The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what the Jews were hoping to do to me!"

In those days John the Baptist began preaching in the Judean wilderness. His message was,
"Turn from your sins and turn to God, because the Kingdom of Heaven is near. "

As soon as the angel was gone, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier, one of his personal attendants.

Your eyes will shine, and your hearts will thrill with joy, for merchants from around the world will come to you. They will bring you the wealth of many lands.

They are expert goldsmiths and silversmiths and workers of bronze and iron. Now begin the work, and may the LORD be with you!"
