Acts 7:5
5: But God gave him no inheritance here, not even one square foot of land. God did promise, however, that eventually the whole country would belong to Abraham and his descendants--though he had no children yet.

- Abraham did this because he was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.
Hebrews 11:13
- All these faithful ones died without receiving what God had promised them, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed the promises of God. They agreed that they were no more than foreigners and nomads here on earth.
- And obviously people who talk like that are looking forward to a country they can call their own.
- If they had meant the country they came from, they would have found a way to go back.
- But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a heavenly city for them.
Genesis 28:13
- At the top of the stairway stood the LORD, and he said, "I am the LORD, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I will give it to you and your descendants.
- Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth! They will cover the land from east to west and from north to south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants.
- What's more, I will be with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. I will someday bring you safely back to this land. I will be with you constantly until I have finished giving you everything I have promised."

- He always stands by his covenant--the commitment he made to a thousand generations.
- This is the covenant he made with Abraham and the oath he swore to Isaac.
- He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to the people of Israel as a never-ending treaty:
- "I will give you the land of Canaan as your special possession."
- He said this when they were few in number, a tiny group of strangers in Canaan.
Deuteronomy 11:9
- If you obey, you will enjoy a long life in the land the LORD swore to give to your ancestors and to you, their descendants--a land flowing with milk and honey!
Genesis 17:16
- And I will bless her and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings will be among her descendants!"
- Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. "How could I become a father at the age of one hundred?" he wondered. "Besides, Sarah is ninety; how could she have a baby?"
- And Abraham said to God, "Yes, may Ishmael enjoy your special blessing!"
- But God replied, "Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You will name him Isaac, and I will confirm my everlasting covenant with him and his descendants.
