14: The Levites even abandoned their homes and property and moved to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons would not allow them to serve the LORD as priests.

2 Chronicles 13:9

  1. And you have chased away the priests of the LORD and the Levites and have appointed your own priests, just like the pagan nations. You let anyone become a priest these days! Whoever comes to be dedicated with a young bull and seven rams can become a priest of these so-called gods of yours!

Numbers 35:2

  1. "Instruct the people of Israel to give to the Levites from their property certain towns to live in, along with the surrounding pasturelands.
  2. These towns will be their homes, and the surrounding lands will provide pasture for their cattle, flocks, and other livestock.
  3. The pastureland assigned to the Levites around these towns will extend 1,500 feet from the town walls in every direction.
  4. Measure off 3,000 feet outside the town walls in every direction--east, south, west, north--with the town at the center. This area will serve as the larger pastureland for the towns.

1 Kings 12:28

  1. So on the advice of his counselors, the king made two gold calves. He said to the people, "It is too much trouble for you to worship in Jerusalem. O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of Egypt!"
  2. He placed these calf idols at the southern and northern ends of Israel--in Bethel and in Dan.
  3. This became a great sin, for the people worshiped them, traveling even as far as Dan.
  4. Jeroboam built shrines at the pagan high places and ordained priests from the rank and file of the people--those who were not from the priestly tribe of Levi.
  5. Jeroboam also instituted a religious festival in Bethel, held on a day in midautumn, similar to the annual Festival of Shelters in Judah. There at Bethel he himself offered sacrifices to the calves he had made. And it was at Bethel that he appointed priests for the pagan shrines he had made.

Joshua 21:20

  1. The rest of the Kohathite clan from the tribe of Levi was allotted these towns and pasturelands from the tribe of Ephraim:
  2. Shechem (a city of refuge for those who accidentally killed someone), Gezer,
  3. Kibzaim, and Beth-horon--four towns.
  4. The following towns and pasturelands were allotted to the priests from the tribe of Dan: Eltekeh, Gibbethon,
  5. Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon--four towns.

Leviticus 27:30

  1. "A tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, belongs to the LORD and must be set apart to him as holy.
  2. If you want to redeem the LORD's tenth of the fruit or grain, you must pay its value, plus 20 percent.
  3. The LORD also owns every tenth animal counted off from your herds and flocks. They are set apart to him as holy.
  4. The tenth animal must not be selected on the basis of whether it is good or bad, and no substitutions will be allowed. If any exchange is in fact made, then both the original animal and the substituted one will be considered holy and cannot be redeemed."
  5. These are the commands that the LORD gave to the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai.

1 Chronicles 6:66

  1. The descendants of Kohath received from the territory of Ephraim these towns, each with its surrounding pasturelands:
  2. Shechem (a city of refuge in the hill country of Ephraim), Gezer,
  3. Jokmeam, Beth-horon,
  4. Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon.
  5. The remaining descendants of Kohath were assigned these towns from the territory of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Aner and Bileam, each with its pasturelands.

1 Kings 13:33

  1. But even after this, Jeroboam did not turn from his evil ways. He continued to choose priests from the rank and file of the people. Anyone who wanted to could become a priest for the pagan shrines.

Numbers 18:21

  1. As for the tribe of Levi, your relatives, I will pay them for their service in the Tabernacle with the tithes from the entire land of Israel.
  2. "From now on, Israelites other than the priests and Levites are to stay away from the Tabernacle. If they come too near, they will be judged guilty and die.
  3. The Levites must serve at the Tabernacle, and they will be held responsible for any offenses against it. This is a permanent law among you. But the Levites will receive no inheritance of land among the Israelites,
  4. because I have given them the Israelites' tithes, which have been set apart as offerings to the LORD. This will be the Levites' share. That is why I said they would receive no inheritance of land among the Israelites."
