1: So David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. Soon his brothers and other relatives joined him there.

Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until this violent storm is past.
I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.
He will send help from heaven to save me, rescuing me from those who are out to get me. My God will send forth his unfailing love and faithfulness.
I am surrounded by fierce lions who greedily devour human prey--whose teeth pierce like spears and arrows, and whose tongues cut like swords.
Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens! May your glory shine over all the earth.

I cry out to the LORD; I plead for the LORD's mercy.
I pour out my complaints before him and tell him all my troubles.
For I am overwhelmed, and you alone know the way I should turn. Wherever I go, my enemies have set traps for me.
I look for someone to come and help me, but no one gives me a passing thought! No one will help me; no one cares a bit what happens to me.
Then I pray to you, O LORD. I say, "You are my place of refuge. You are all I really want in life.

Once when David was at the rock near the cave of Adullam, the Philistine army was camped in the valley of Rephaim. The Three (who were among the Thirty--an elite group among David's fighting men) went down to meet him there.

They were too good for this world. They wandered over deserts and mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.

So David escaped from Saul and went to King Achish of Gath.
But Achish's officers weren't happy about his being there. "Isn't this David, the king of the land?" they asked. "Isn't he the one the people honor with dances, singing, `Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands'?"
David heard these comments and was afraid of what King Achish might do to him.
So he pretended to be insane, scratching on doors and drooling down his beard.
Finally, King Achish said to his men, "Must you bring me a madman?

You people of Mareshah, I will bring a conqueror to capture your town. And the leaders of Israel will go to Adullam.

Once during harvesttime, when David was at the cave of Adullam, the Philistine army was camped in the valley of Rephaim. The Three (who were among the Thirty--an elite group among David's fighting men) went down to meet him there.
David was staying in the stronghold at the time, and a Philistine detachment had occupied the town of Bethlehem.

Look! The LORD is coming! He leaves his throne in heaven and comes to earth, walking on the high places.
