8: "When the Israelites were in Egypt and cried out to the LORD, he sent Moses and Aaron to rescue them from Egypt and to bring them into this land.

Then the LORD became angry with Moses. "All right," he said. "What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? He is a good speaker. And look! He is on his way to meet you now. And when he sees you, he will be very glad.
You will talk to him, giving him the words to say. I will help both of you to speak clearly, and I will tell you what to do.
Aaron will be your spokesman to the people, and you will be as God to him, telling him what to say.

Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites still groaned beneath their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their pleas for deliverance rose up to God.
God heard their cries and remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The cries of the people of Israel have reached me, and I have seen how the Egyptians have oppressed them with heavy tasks.
Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You will lead my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt."

The Aaron and Moses named in this list are the same Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said, "Lead all the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt, division by division."

This was how the LORD rescued Israel from the Egyptians that day. And the Israelites could see the bodies of the Egyptians washed up on the shore.
When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the LORD had displayed against the Egyptians, they feared the LORD and put their faith in him and his servant Moses.

He brought them to the border of his holy land, to this land of hills he had won for them.
He drove out the nations before them; he gave them their inheritance by lot. He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes.

He gave his people the lands of pagan nations, and they harvested crops that others had planted.

Now the LORD had said to Aaron, "Go out into the wilderness to meet Moses." So Aaron traveled to the mountain of God, where he found Moses and greeted him warmly.
Moses then told Aaron everything the LORD had commanded them to do and say. And he told him about the miraculous signs they were to perform.
So Moses and Aaron returned to Egypt and called the leaders of Israel to a meeting.
Aaron told them everything the LORD had told Moses, and Moses performed the miraculous signs as they watched.
The leaders were soon convinced that the LORD had sent Moses and Aaron. And when they realized that the LORD had seen their misery and was deeply concerned for them, they all bowed their heads and worshiped.

"Be strong and courageous, for you will lead my people to possess all the land I swore to give their ancestors.

"Now that my servant Moses is dead, you must lead my people across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them.
I promise you what I promised Moses: `Everywhere you go, you will be on land I have given you--
from the Negev Desert in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north, from the Euphrates River on the east to the Mediterranean Sea on the west, and all the land of the Hittites.'

Today you will know that the living God is among you. He will surely drive out the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.
Think of it! The Ark of the Covenant, which belongs to the Lord of the whole earth, will lead you across the Jordan River!
Now choose twelve men, one from each tribe.
The priests will be carrying the Ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth. When their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will pile up there in one heap."

and that our ancestors went down to Egypt. We lived there a long time and suffered as slaves to the Egyptians.

And he gave them this message from the LORD, the God of Israel: "I brought you from Egypt and rescued you from the Egyptians and from all of the nations that were oppressing you.

O God, we have heard it with our own ears--our ancestors have told us of all you did in other days, in days long ago:
You drove out the pagan nations and gave all the land to our ancestors; you crushed their enemies, setting our ancestors free.
They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strength that gave them victory. It was by your mighty power that they succeeded; it was because you favored them and smiled on them.

And that very day the LORD began to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt, division by division.

"It was the LORD who appointed Moses and Aaron," Samuel continued. "He brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt.

So Jacob left Beersheba, and his sons brought him to Egypt. They carried their little ones and wives in the wagons Pharaoh had provided for them.
They brought their livestock, too, and all the belongings they had acquired in the land of Canaan. Jacob and his entire family arrived in Egypt--
sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters--all his descendants.
